  • Danger of the Single Story

On this week’s episode, we talk stories we tell ourselves and others about who we are and what we are to be, and determine why we’re more than just one story. Girl with a traumatic childhood, Guy with a troubled past, Girl that had her baby in high school. We all know the types of backstories that get attention because they easily frame an individual and help others categorize that person quickly. But what if we didn’t use these narratives to define ourselves and others? What if we allowed ourselves to be more than one story, what if we all agreed that our histories would not define us, and what if we didn’t rely on the stories we’ve heard of others to define them before we get to know them? Listen as we discuss the dangers of the single story and how we can move ourselves and others beyond it.

  • Pick a Side

On this week’s episode, we talk making tough choices and what it can mean to pick a side. Democrat or Republican, pro-choice or pro-life, Beyoncé’s Lemonade or Rihanna's Anti—life is full of tough choices. Often the side you choose tells a lot about your morals, values, and whether or not you actually know good music. As a result of the choices you make, you can find yourself ostracized by friends and family, leaving you questioning where your loyalties lie and if you chose correctly in the first place. Listen as we discuss some of the toughest choices we’ve ever made, analyze what certain choices say about others, and face the realities of choosing sides.

  • What About Your Friends
On this week’s episode, Ashley and Marcy talk the guidelines that define friendships. All female relationships have a girl code—rules, spoken and unspoken norms, that guide how we are expected to behave and what behaviors we should expect in return. When the rules are followed, women’s relationships with one another can exist in near-perfect harmony. But when missteps occur or rules are ignored, all hell breaks loose and the resulting pain and anger suffered from that broken trust is difficult to forget. Listen as we break down the rules of friendship between women from school yards to boardrooms, and everywhere in between. • Our Body, Not Always Our Choice
On this week’s episode Ashley and Marcy talk racism, sex and reproductive health. Black women are disproportionately affected by multiple sexual and reproductive health conditions compared with women of other races/ethnicities. In fact,  HIV and pregnancy-related complications remain within the top 10 leading causes of death for African American women aged 20–54 and 15–34 years, respectively. Beyond this, physiological stressor exacerbated by racism might have Black women experiencing internalized racism which can manifest in low self-worth, low self-confidence, and depression. These experiences may, in turn, foster risky sexual behaviors that compromise our health. There is a lot to unpack here and we’re going to dive deep. Listen as we discuss the impact society, our communities, and our individual choices have on our reproductive health.   Homework:  Decisions- The Skinny Black Girl I was pregnant and in Crisis:All the Doctors and Nurses saw was an incompetent Black women - Tressie McMillam Cottom   Have you checked into Homeroom?
