Artemis Crow

In this episode we get to talk with writer Artemis Crow about the beginning or her grand adventure omnibus of novels ‘The Zodiac Assassins’. This series of books will encompass 12 novels and 12 novellas in a sweeping arc of the universe that has a world much like the one we all know called The OverWorld and a place of magic, mystery, mayhem and violence called InBetween. The series explains how one world became two and brings the reader back and forth between interactions between these worlds.

Artemis is our guide (especially mine) in gaining the understanding as we talked about her first book in the series, ‘Lyon’s Roar’ and the significance between the roles of the novels and novellas in this ambitious series. Maintaining characters in both human and “paranorm” form, this is a complex and compelling universe build with a depth and edge rare in a series that somewhat defies a genre or tag. It becomes a thrill ride with jarring and unexpected twists, which become more complex, compelling and baffling the deeper you become immersed in the overall story,

Lyon’s Roar

When you play “Three Of These Things Belong Together”, there is an obvious forth that doesn’t belong. So, if I were to list:  Horror Writer, Stainless Steel Design and Fabrication, Self Help Writer and Hot Sauce Inventor they would All apply to our guest and great friend of the show Rob Watts…except that you would have to add amazing musician, artist, chef, children’s author and composer of the Opening Theme to Sci Fi Saturday Night. The cool thing is we got to talk about almost everything on the list in this expanded episode.

Robs way with words and characters leads the reader down the primrose path to terror yet again without the need for gratuitous gore and violence. His stories are finely crafted pieces of emotional machinery that take you to many different places, all with the single intent of watching the bloody Jack In The Box rise up and scare the hell out of you.

After spending time also talking about The Stainless Steel Guys, his revised writing process and the state of Nobel Prize Winning Writers in Iceland we got the chance to talk about his book for writers ’Book Signing 101’. This book is specifically written for writers to help them as they venture out into the world of book signings and conventions. Written in a wonderfully relaxed narrative style, it helps anyone manage the pitfalls off all such public events.

We got the chance to talk with him about his beginnings with Johnny Raygun, his amazing body of work and some of his current projects including his wonderful new parody, Spaceforce, The Electric Black with Joe Schmalke and his upcoming Kickstarter for Sgt. Werewolf.

It was like sitting down and talking again with an old friend, which is exactly what it was.

Alvin Baylor Lives!

This episode is actually two stories in one. One is the obvious part. Alvin Baylor Lives! is a fascinating well-constructed Sci Fi novel/audio book set in the far future with McGuffin after McGuffin to keep the reader/listener enthralled. One the one hand, charming while at the same time gritty, we learn about the world that Alvin inhabits, the society he survives in and the profound affect one man can have.

The other story is about two boyhood friends, Maximillian Gray and Josh Horowitz. After surviving the “rigors” of public education together in the Greater LA Area, they went their separate ways as often happens. Max and Josh both found themselves in the entertainment industry and a chance social media reconnection brought them back together for this project: Max as writer and Josh as audio book creator.

So, this episode is two fascinating stories. One is about a book/audio book and the other is the rekindling of a friendship to create it. It’s a really cool story with two really eloquent interesting men.

Any conversation with Dan is fun but when we get to talk about his festival, its always a treat,. We talked about the inclusion this year of web-series. The festival decided there were a number of web-series contributors that has a voice and PKDFF was going to give it to them. The discussion then turned to the many unique and distinctive voices this year in the festival all of which, in some way, somehow embraced some part of the thematic qualities of Philip K Dick and his work.

On this edition of Sci Fi Saturday Night we go old school and talk about a new print magazine. To be fair, Dreamforge is much much more than just a print magazine. It is in fact a print,/digital hybrid quarterly event of Science Fiction with its own voice, its own look and its own outlook. That outlook is one of positivity for the human condition surrounded by a unique digital interface for the participant.

Scot Noel, the driving force behind Dreamforge,spent some time with us just as his KickStarter was about to end (by the time of this airing, it has been fully funded). We got the chance to talk about how beautiful the print version is and why it was so important to him to have a quality hard version of Dreamforce. On their website there is also  a unique portal for readers to interact as well. We spoke about the positive outlook of this project in “less than positive times” and had a wonderful. relaxed and fun conversation.

It’s important to remember that science fiction can also bring out the best in who we are and what may become. Dreamforge  works to bring that forward in a unique and yet also very old school way. It is a quite  wonderful effort.

The Sirens Song

In this episode we speak again with multi-talented Nick Shakespeare about what’s he’s currently working on, what his new projects are, the state of his current projects.

Nick gets to talk about the current state of his personal project The Sirens Song Parts One and Two, as well as his day job as storyboard artist and how his current success has delayed his “other stuff”.

We get sidetracked talking about the inevitable Marvel vs. DC movies and why oh why DC just doesn’t seem to get it…yet. Controversial? Perhaps, but interesting viewpoints. Good conversation is what we do.
