  • Unraveling CRISPR-Cas9 with Jennifer Doudna - Conversations with History
Conversations host Harry Kreisler welcomes Professor Jennifer Doudna of UC Berkeley for a discussion of her intellectual odyssey that led to the discovery of CRISPR-Cas9, a revolutionary tool for gene editing. In the conversation, they explore the implications of CRISPR-Cas9 for agriculture, biotechnology and biomedicine. They also discuss how education and public advocacy can broaden insight into the ethical and policy dimensions of the biological revolution that is upon us. • Eavesdropping on Whales: How Whale Calls Inform Science
Whales are among the most fascinating animals in the ocean. People are intrigued by their impressive size, intelligence, and their use of sound to communicate. Join postdoctoral scholar Goldie Phillips for a captivating look into how scientists use whale calls to study whale populations. Series: "Jeffrey B. Graham Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture Series" [Science] [Show ID: 34395]

  • Ethical Issues in Cybersecurity Research - Exploring Ethics
Computer security is a field that is fundamentally co-dependent — an interplay between the potential risk created by technology and the actual threats created by adversaries. The dance between defenders, technologists and attackers is one that is rich and dynamic and fuels both a large active research community and a multi-billion dollar computer security industry. Inevitably, ethical issues are exposed at multiple levels of this stack -- frequently at precisely those points where consequences are not well understood. Stefan Savage, PhD, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, describes some of the ethical issues he has encountered in his work - ranging from measurement studies of cybercrime to identifying security vulnerabilities in automobiles - and explore how these issues have challenged and focused him. • Re-constructing Brains in the Lab to Revolutionize Neuroscience - Exploring Ethics
Cerebral organoids, also known as mini-brains, are tridimensional self-organized structures derived from stem cells that resemble the early stages of the human embryonic brain. This new tool allows researchers to explore fundamental neurodevelopmental steps otherwise inaccessible in utero experimentally. Alysson Muotri, UC San Diego Stem Cell Program, explains how mini brains are generated in his lab and how this strategy can create novel therapeutical insights on neurogenetic disorders, such as autism. He also describes the use of mini-brains to explore the uniqueness of the human brain compared to other extinct species, such as the Neanderthals. Limitations and ethical concerns surrounding this exciting technology are also discussed. Series: "Exploring Ethics" [Humanities] [Science] [Show ID: 33715]

  • Chemical Bits: Finding New Drugs Using Computers - Saturday Science at The Scripps Research with Stefano Forli
Scripps Research's Stefano Forli shares about his work using computational tools to screen large libraries of compounds using methods such as high throughput virtual screening (HTVS) or designing focused virtual libraries based on specific synthetic pathways to identify molecules that can act as biological probes and novel therapeutic agents. Series: "Saturday Science at Scripps Research " [Science] [Show ID: 34071]

  • Computer Security for Victims of Intimate Partner Violence with Tom Ristenpart - UC San Diego Computer Science and Engineering Research Open House 2019 Keynote Address
What technology risks are faced by people who experience intimate partner violence? How is the security community failing them, and what questions might we need to ask to make progress on social and technical interventions? UC San Diego CSE Alumnus Thomas Ristenpart discusses computer security with a focus on digital privacy and safety in intimate partner violence. He is a member of the Computer Science department at Cornell University. Series: "Computer Science Channel" [Science] [Show ID: 34588]

  • Development of Therapeutic Approaches for Muscle Disease Using Human Pluripotent Stem Cells
April Pyle, Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics at UCLA, uses multi-disciplinary approaches to study human pluripotent stem cell biology and differentiation of these cells for use in regenerative medicine. She studies both basic aspects of stem cell biology as well as more translational aspects of human pluripotent stem cell differentiation towards skeletal muscle for use in therapeutic approaches for patients with muscular dystrophy.
