Priya Mehta, Ph.D, is a Medical Science Liaison in the Medical Affairs -
Oncology Division - BU Biologics at Zydus Group in India. She completed
her M.Sc. (integrated) in Medical Biotechnology from ARIBAS S P
University and worked in the research field for over 2 years as a JRF in
various institutions such as GCRI Ahmedabad, M S University, Baroda,
and ICIRC, Ahmedabad. During this time, she gained expertise in
analytical techniques such as DNA/RNA/Plasmid/PBMCs Isolation,
Electrophoresis, Blotting, Cell Culture, Expression Cloning, RT PCR,
IHC, and more.
Later on, Priya shifted her focus to academia and began teaching

Virender Singh for the PhD talk show by Biopatrika, Kirsty shares her
health update and about the rare heart cancer she recently got diagnosed
with.
🩺 Kirsty has primary cardiac right atrial angiosarcoma, one of the
rarest cancers on the planet. Her cancer typically affects less than 1
in 20 million people. In this video, she discusses how the sudden
diagnosis affected her personal and professional life, and how it
affected her work schedule.
🧬 Rare diseases affect less than 5 in 10,000 people and are often
associated with lengthy diagnosis and poor prognosis. Kirsty wants to
use this #rarediseaseday to increase awareness about her #raredisease
and the need for improved funding into novel diagnostics and treatments.
🚨 Did you know that primary tumors of the heart affect 1 in 2 million
people, and only 20% of primary heart tumors are malignant?
Additionally, the average survival for Kirsty's cancer is 7 months
post-diagnosis. These statistics highlight the urgent need for increased
awareness and funding for rare diseases.
🔬 Genomic testing is vital for cancers like Kirsty's, as it allows for
targeted treatments like immunotherapy, CAR-T, and the mRNA vaccine.

Science Beyond the boundaries
Meet Kirsty Smitten, a talented and driven PhD candidate in Chemistry and Microbiology. Kirsty, CEO and co-founder MetalloBio (https://www.metallobio.com/),
is currently working on developing two innovative ruthenium(II)
antimicrobial compounds, an extension her PhD research. These compounds
have shown to be as effective as clinical antibiotics on World Health
Organization priority pathogens, including drug-resistant strains of
Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
As a participant in the Innovate UK ICURe programme, Kirsty is exploring
the market potential for these compounds and developing a
commercialization business plan. Her undergraduate studies were
completed at the University of Sheffield's Department of Chemistry,
where she went on to complete her PhD under the supervision of Professor
Jim Thomas in Chemistry and Professor Simon Foster in the Department of
Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.

background in chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Currently

Dr. Shrishti Singh is a biomedical engineer who recently completed her
PhD at George Mason University in Virginia, United States. She did her
undergraduate degree in engineering at Ramya Institute of Technology in
Bangalore, India and then went on to do a fully funded Masters degree in
the United States. She worked on developing a new kind of contrast
agent that can be used for imaging tumors in the early stages and deeper
within the tissues. Dr. Singh always wanted to change people's lives
and create technologies that could do so. She was inspired to pursue
engineering after visiting her mother in the hospital as a teenager. She
faced some challenges as a female engineer from India, but was able to
overcome them and achieve her goal of earning a PhD.

Sreyashree (Sreya) Bose, PhD is a process development scientist at
Lonza, USA. She completed her Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology in
India, and then went on to earn her PhD at Texas A&M University,
where she studied Telomere biology in plants. She did a short postdoc in
a breast cancer lab before joining Lonza. The interview process at
Lonza included an online application, referral from a current employee,
an initial HR screen, an interview with the hiring manager, and a panel
interview with multiple people. Sreya's role as a process development
scientist at Lonza's cell and gene therapy business unit includes taking
care of the process side of developing cell and gene therapy products
for multiple clients.
Interview key highlights: 1) Importance of networking. She mentioned
that referral from a peer already working in the industry helped her in
getting this job. Also she suggested for people looking for a position
in certain industry it's always good to have some networks and mentors
in the same industry.
2) She emphasized one should have the ability to learn and be curious,
time management, project management and interpersonal skills.
3) Her work week is not much different than what it is during PhD.
4) Participation in student organizations helped her develop leadership
skills, teamwork and people management skills.
