The World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina seems to be working wonders for the Scottish independence cause. The Argentinian government is using the match to bring the Falklands dispute to international attention - causing a defensive reaction in England on the indignant basis that "the Falkland Islanders have a right to democratic self-determination". Just one snag, of course - the British government have been telling the people of Scotland that they have no right to choose their own future. "Now is not the time", "it would be terribly inconvenient right now", etc, etc. The UK is Scotland's prison, and self-determination is an alien concept there. That contradiction is surely not sustainable.

From bizarre historical theories about how Norway colonised Scotland but England never did, to lengthy psychobabble dissertations about how Scotland will only attain full "maturity" as a nation once it collectively dons an England football shirt, some of our unionist friends do seem to be struggling terribly with a handful of social media posts pointing out that Scots may not be wholeheartedly supporting England in their World Cup quarter-final against Norway. Here are three good reasons why the so-called "Anyone But England" phenomenon is in fact perfectly rational.

The polling pattern has become increasingly clear - the Burnham bounce has not been sufficient to push Labour into the lead GB-wide, and the straws in the wind also suggests the SNP's dominance in Scotland is not being challenged.

The fourth GB-wide poll of the post-Starmer era comes from YouGov, and it continues the pattern of two of the other three by showing only a very minor Burnham bounce. The SNP continue to be dominant in the Scottish subsample.

The "Downing Street North" plan suggests that Andy Burnham is not planning to disperse power throughout the UK, but rather to take some of the power that is currently concentrated in London and concentrate it in Manchester instead - a city that feels just as distant from Scotland as London does.
