They've been called variously wraiths, specters, phantoms, apparitions, shadows or shades. But everyone agrees that if there are such things as ghosts, they are the souls of dead persons, haunting living persons. And that's what our story is about. Ghosts.

Nameless horrors, a nice phrase. But as soon as you put a name and identity to horrors, somehow they prove bearable. In the last century, people have shown that they can and do bear up under mass genocide and atomic bombings. But the horror that is nameless, that is the most fearful of all. And our spine-tingler will try to put a name to one kind of horror.

It is raining hard as Gloria Winters is driving home knowing that she is going to be late for dinner and Gloria Winters has a husband who doesn’t appreciate lateness. The night seems to be getting blacker and the rain shows no sign of easing. Suddenly the headlights pick up something in the road and she stops to discover that it is a man who has been hit by a car, which drove off. She is surprised to see that Al Grisham looks exactly like her husband such a dead ringer in fact that they could be twins. Gloria is having problems with her husband and she gets it in her mind that Al Grisham could take out her husband and take his place.

And the implication is, of course, that if some magical power could grant the plea, how much better things would be handled. Or, at the very least, how differently. But is that a valid concept? Does it follow inevitably that people could or would handle things better a second time around?

The almost always misquoted quote by an obscure poet is the theme of tonight's Spine-Tingler. Backward, turn backward, oh time in thy flight. If you haven't spotted the misquote, I'll clear it up for you later. Concentrate first on the fascinating problem of a man with fatal brain injury who still finds time to talk to himself.

Paula Richards and her husband have been told that she will never be able to bear a child so Paula Richards aged 24 put her future in the hands of an old fortuneteller and dealer in the macabre who told her one thing she must add about their arrangement. The fortune-teller told Paula that on the birth of her child she would demand one favor and that she must promise to grant it. She told Paula that she would ask it when the child was born. She would not say what it was only that it would be a very small favor. She warned Paula that if she did decide to bargain with her she must be ready to keep her part of it.

However, this spine-tingling tale actually takes place in a modern luxury high -rise apartment building and in broad daylight.

At 42, George Wesley Sanderson is handsome, intelligent, and wealthy. He is married to a most beautiful woman. He is a partner in a prestigious law firm. He has a host of friends because he is gracious, considerate, sensitive, and obliging. And so you look at him sipping his morning coffee in his luxurious apartment in New York City and you say to yourself, here indeed is one of fortune's favorites. But what is it to write a book? Ah? That's another thing altogether. But what difference does it make? All the difference in the world.

What is a book? Two, three, four hundred pages of words lying side by side in rows. That's all. Words we all know. Many of them we use. Nothing mysterious about the words themselves. But they are not thrown helter -skelter on the pages, are they? No, they lie there in a certain order, each one following on the one before. And who prescribed that order? Who put this word here and that word there? A writer. And this is the story of a writer named Stephen Lake and the book he wrote.
