Daniel is one of my oldest and closest friends, but we have very different opinions about politics, culture and how to solve the world's problems. To put it bluntly, Daniel is left leaning and is passionate about social justice. I consider myself to be more of a moderate, sympathetic to the right and somewhat conservative. That's putting it bluntly though. The truth is we're both two complex humans with a variety of beliefs. The bottom line however is that we do differ quite a bit.
In a time of unprecedented political and cultural polarisation I think there's never been a better time for people with opposing ideas to sit down and explore their ideas together.
This exactly what Daniel and I did. Our conversation saw us explore Daniel's first encounter with identity politics, his experience with racial oppression, the Rhodes Must Fall movement and his views on the current Black Lives Matter movement sweeping across America.
Daniel was also kind enough to let me challenge him on a variety of different issues. I'm appreciative of his patience and willingness to engage with me, particularly during such a challenging cultural and political moment as the one we find ourselves in.
