Screaming Needle Sessions

“All my tears had been wiped away when you gave me love.” I use House Music as my own form of therapy. At the time I mixed this set, I didn’t intend for it to serve this purpose. But I can honestly say that when I listened to it, it kicked my ass. The surprise was track 4, “Happy,” by Ferry Ultra and Gwen McCrea. Suffice to say that I’m happy with this one. So if you’re down and feeling as if things aren’t great, just remember to take your problems to the dancefloor.

“A new reality…” I’ve had many great nights on a lot of great dance floors. I live for hearing brilliant DJs create unforgettable dancefloor moments. Frankie Knuckles’ 8 hour set at the Saint’s 2001 White Party at NYC’s glorious Roseland Ballroom was not only unforgettable, it was life changing. He had such grace. He understood how to shape a party. And he always knew how to give the dancefloor exactly what they wanted. Long live Frankie.

“Now that I’m free, free for myself, I’m doing better without you.” I have been very lucky to take three trips to South Africa over the past 12 months. Since the first trip, I have been exploring, listening and working to learn about South African House Music and incorporate it into my own sound. I’m very proud of this set. I feel like it both represents South Africa’s contribution to the genre and my own style. It’s groovy, delicate and introspective. Enjoy.

When I listen to this set time seems to fly by, and before I know it, the music is done. In a time when life offers so many distractions, it is nice to find a way to stop the never ending stream of mental noise and become lost in the hypnotic power of House Music.

“You will always keep me flying in the sky of love.”

It’s great to play an event where no one knows they like House Music, and then come away thinking that the music provided the perfect soundtrack to the evening. Earlier this week I had the pleasure of playing in the Imperial Ballroom of Grand Rapids’ famed Grand Plaza Hotel. (Thanks to the Michigan Nonprofit Association for the great opportunity!) The ornate room was a perfect landscape to this colorful, soulful set. It’s easy to get lost in this set. I hope you do.

One of the fundamental aspects of House Music is that it draws up many different music genres and fuses them with the basic 4/4 beat structure. As a DJ this means that you can always keep your dance floor on its toes; no one knows what you will play next. So let some Swing House add some flavor to your beat.
