  • 1 Corinthians, Part 14
    • 1 Corinthians 7:39-8:13
    • I Corinthians 7:39 – People have different views on what “only in the Lord” means.
      • Some argue that this phrase means “only a Christian.” This interpretation does not seem to match up with Paul’s previous guidance about being married to an unbelieving husband.
      • See Ephesians 6:1 and Colossians 3:18 for other places where this phrase is used. Here the phrase could simply mean, “according to God’s will.” In those verses, the obedience is in the Lord. In this passage, the marriage is in the Lord.
      • 1 Corinthians 8:1 – If “all” here means the majority of the audience that knew meat offered to idols not sinful to eat, I Corinthians 8:7 is indicating that not everyone had that knowledge. Therefore, they should be careful not to offend others who lack that knowledge. We must be careful to not cause others to violate their conscience by doing something they think is wrong even if it is not a sin.

                                                      • I Corinthians 7:19 – See Ephesians 2:8. There are two parts to man’s salvation. Providing the means for salvation is 100% up to God. Accepting salvation by obeying God is 100% up to man. See Luke 17:10.
                                                        • See Judges 7:2. God does not want man to think that salvation is his own doing.
                                                        • I Corinthians 7:23 – See Ephesians 1:7; Titus 3:5; Romans 1:16; Matthew 15:9.
                                                        • I Corinthians 7:24 – Some try to apply this verse too broadly and argue that you do not have to put aside sins you were already practicing when you became a Christian. This view contradicts I Corinthians 7:19 and Acts 3:26, as well as many other passages.
                                                        • I Corinthians 7:25-35 – Paul is giving advice in light of the persecution that was coming. He was not speaking against marriage. He was just saying that if they were not married, it would be better to remain that way with persecution on the way.
                                                        • I Corinthians 7:36-38 – There are different views on the meaning of this passage. Some think it is talking about a man’s own virginity. Some think it is talking about giving a man’s virgin daughter in marriage. Others think it is talking about a man marrying his betrothed. The ESV translation favors this third view.

This seems to match with the rest of I Corinthians 7:2-9, which is Paul’s answer to the question.
                                                                                                                • I Corinthians 7:3-5 – Husbands and wives are not to deprive each other sexually.

                                                                                                                • I Corinthians 7:15 – If an unbelieving spouse is determined to leave, there is nothing the remaining spouse can do but let them go. Nowhere in the Bible do we see that the remaining spouse can remarry with God’s approval. The only exception is if one spouse was guilty of adultery. In that case, the innocent spouse can remarry. (Matthew 19:9; Mark 10:11; Matthew 5:32; Luke 16:18; Romans 7:3)
                                                                                                                  • The word “bondage” here is not talking about being bound under the law. It is talking about servitude. If an unbelieving spouse leaves, the remaining spouse is not required to continue to serve the spouse who left.
