II Kings 14:23-25 – Timeline of the book of Jonah.
The book of Jonah was written about 780 B.C.
Matthew 12:39-41 – Jesus Himself testified to the factuality of the story of Jonah. It is not just a myth or fairytale as some claim.
Two main points of the book of Jonah:
God is the God of all, not just the Jews.
God is anxious to save all, even the Gentiles.
Jonah 1:1-17 – This book is full of miracles and acts of God. It is not a miracle that a great storm arose that endangered the ship. We also know there are creatures in the sea that are large enough to swallow a man. It is a miracle that Jonah was able to survive in the belly of the fish.
Jonah 2 – Jonah recounts his prayer for salvation. God delivers Jonah from the belly of the fish.
Jonah 3 – Jonah preaches to Ninevah and the people repented. God repented of the punishment He had planned for the city (Jonah 3:10).
See Luke 11:30 – Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites. The Ninevites repented because of what had happened to Jonah.
Jonah 4 – Jonah shows his prejudice and becomes angry with God because of the repentance of Ninevah.
Lessons from the book:
God’s love and mercy for all people.
The evil of being narrow-minded and prejudiced.
National sin requires national repentance.
All that God created is in His control.
We can’t run from disobedience.

Luke 7:18
Luke 7:18-23 – John had already declared Jesus to be the one who was coming after him. It is possible John sent these disciples to ask this question for their benefit.
Luke 7:24-35 – Roles in service to God do not necessarily come with earthly glory.
Luke 7:36-50 – A woman anoints Jesus and washes His feet with her hair. Jesus teaches a parable showing that those who have been forgiven the most love the most.
Luke 8:1-3 – Compare Luke 9:58. Jesus did not have a lavish lifestyle.
Luke 8:4-15 – Parable of the sower (or the soils). Notice that no one understood the parable right away. Those who wanted to understand came and asked and learned the full meaning. It is important for us to work to be good soil. It is not enough for us to academically know God’s Word – we have to apply it and bear fruit.

The system known as Calvinism dates back to Augustine, well before Calvin.
Calvinism is based on a misunderstanding of the sovereignty of God.
God has the power to save, but also the power and right to set the conditions for salvation.
Matthew 11:28-29
John Calvin endorsed the beliefs of Augustine and expanded on them. The five points of Calvinism were formed during the Synod of Dort in the 1618-1619.
Calvinism is based on the belief that God saves man without intervention from man. Sinners do not save themselves in any manner at all.
The Five Points
Total depravity: Born guilty of Adam’s sin; thus, totally inclined to evil, incapable of a good thought or deed.
Unconditional predestination: Being born incapable of a good thought, none could choose to be saved; therefore, God chose some to be saved.
Limited atonement: God chose some to be saved; some were not chosen, therefore Christ died only for the chosen ones.
Irresistible grace (direct operation of the Holy Spirit): God chose some to be saved and sent the Holy Spirit upon those He had chosen.
Perseverance of saints (once saved, always saved)
A logical system
Each step follows very logically.
Logical, but wrong!
Calvinism is a logical system that starts from an incorrect premise, namely that all people are themselves guilty of Adam’s sin. The Bible refutes this in many places. With this premise removed, the whole Calvinist system of belief collapses.

Luke 6:20-26 – The Beatitudes.

Taken in harmony with other scriptures, Jesus is not saying that we should not defend ourselves or allow people to abuse us. We should not be eager to hold other people’s sins against them. We have all sinned!
Luke 6:31-35 – Treat others the way you want to be treated.
Luke 6:36-38 – See Luke 17:3.
Luke 6:39-45 – We have to address our own issues before we can hope to help others.
Luke 6:46-49 – The difference between those who hear and do and those who hear and don’t do. See Ezekiel 33:30-33.
Luke 7:1-10 – Jesus heals the servant of the Roman centurion after he displays great faith.
Luke 7:11-17 – Jesus raises a dead man being carried in a coffin.

Philippians 4:6-13
Godly peace is a peace that comes from having a God-ward attitude.
Do not be overly anxious. Philippians 4:6
Matthew 6:25-34 – God provides for His people. If we have the right priorities, other things will take care of themselves. Take one day at a time.
Matthew 6:11 – Note that Jesus prays for the bread for today.
Prayer is necessary in order to enjoy godly peace. Philippians 4:6
I Peter 5:6-7 – Prayer is a way of casting our anxieties on God.

Ephesians 5:20 – Thanksgiving must be a part of our prayers.
Psalms 100:3-5
Enduring peace comes from God. Philippians 4:7

Only a spiritual mind and a spiritual life enjoy peace. Philippians 4:8-9
Romans 8:6 – Spiritual mindedness brings peace.

Introduction
Revelation 12:1-17 – Revelation details a figurative battle between good and evil.

What does it take to be a soldier for Christ?

This is a spiritual fight.

II Timothy 3:16-17 – The Word of God is the weapon we need.

We can’t be effective wielding the sword of the Spirit without training and practice.
