Divine traditions

It is good to follow traditions of divine origin. We must be careful to not let our manmade traditions supersede divine traditions.
I Corinthians 14:33-37 – This is true in all the churches. This is God’s will. It is a divine tradition that the Corinthians were not exempt from.

Four approaches:
Ignore the traditions
“The Bible is a book of wisdom or fables, but not something to live by.”
Churched made up of people like this don’t resemble the churches of the Bible.
Update the traditions
“The traditions need to be updated for modern times. Teaching about homosexuality, divorce, women’s roles, etc. have to be updated to fit the times.”
A church of people with these beliefs is interested in marketing itself to be pleasing to the most people.
Respect the traditions
“Traditions need to be respected, but not necessarily followed.”
Hold to the traditions
“If I don’t agree with the traditions, I am wrong. If society does not agree with the traditions, society is wrong.”
It is the job of the church to spread and preserve the divine traditions.

Matthew 21:23-27 – Jesus’ authority is questioned.
Matthew 21:28-32 – the parable of the two sons
The bottom line is whether we obey God’s message
It doesn’t matter if we say we obey God or have good intentions of doing so. We have to actually obey God’s word!
Hebrews 5:7-9 – We become next in a line of obedient people after Jesus.
Matthew 7:15-20 – A person’s actions (fruits) reveal their heart.
Judges 3:3-4 – These nations were left to test the obedience of Israel.
Deuteronomy 8:2
Deuteronomy 13:1-4 – God allows pressure to be put on His people to test their obedience.
In conversion
When we sin
We don’t always follow God’s commands. We have to make a decision about how to respond. Do we quit or do we repent and turn back to God?
When convicted by the word
Do we obey or not?
Today and tomorrow

Luke 15:8-10 – parable of the lost coin
Luke 15:11-32 – parable of the prodigal son
Luke 15:22-23 – The father rejoices when the lost son returns home.
Luke 15:29 – The older son did not thing it was fair that the return of the younger brother was being celebrated.
God’s heart beats for people
God wants other people to share in His passion for people.
We have to be careful not to be like the resentful older brother in the parable of the prodigal son.

A passion for Jesus causes some things we used to hold dear to now be meaningless to us.
If we are passionate about something, we naturally seek to spend time on it to the exclusion of other things.
We have to seek to develop a passion for Jesus.

Look to Jesus instead of at your own problems and things will change.

Receiving the Law and Wilderness Wandering (Exodus 16 – Deuteronomy)
Summary:
Second half of Exodus – The Israelites travel through the wilderness. God reveals His law for the Israelites. The tabernacle is constructed.
Leviticus – Continues the recording of the law.
Numbers – Census of the people. 12 spies spy out the land of Canaan. Israelites punished for unbelief with wandering in the wilderness for 40 years.
Deuteronomy – Moses speaks to the people and repeats God’s commands to them.
Moses as a leader (Deuteronomy 34:10-12)
God spoke to Moses directly. Deuteronomy 34:10-12
He was a strong and humble leader at the same time.
