- Calvinism, Part 5: Limited Atonement
- Galatians 5:4 – Refutes the doctrine of perseverance of the saints.
- Acts 7:54 – Refutes the doctrine of irresistible grace.
- Limited atonement: the doctrine that Christ died to save only a limited number of people – His death was designated to save some and not others.
- Consequences of the doctrine:
- Denies the free will of man (Revelation 22:17)
- Makes God a respecter of persons (Romans 2:11)
- Makes preaching the gospel to sinners a mockery, i.e., tantalizes him with an invitation to come when he cannot come.
- Proof texts examined:
- Matthew 1:21 – Only “his people” would be saved. This is talking about those who would answer His call – not about a group selected by God before time began.
- Matthew 20:28
- John 10:11 – “the sheep” are those that decide to follow Jesus – not those who God selected before time began.
- Acts 20:28
- Proof of its falsity
- Hebrews 2:9 – Jesus tasted death for everyone.
- II Peter 3:9 – God wants all to be saved.

- The Calvinists’ dilemma
- God clearly states that He wants all to be saved, yet the doctrine of limited atonement requires that God only selected some to be saved.
- The dilemma solved
- The Bible does offer salvation to all.
- But God has not ordained any individual to be saved.
- God offers salvation to all, but has ordained that only those who accept salvation on His terms will be saved.

- Luke 12:32-13:17
- Luke 12:32-34 – See I Timothy 5:8; Colossians 3:1-5; Luke 16:13
- Luke 12:35-48 – Luke 12:40 is the key idea here – be ready! Don’t procrastinate on spiritual matters.
- Luke 12:49-53 – See Matthew 10:34-39; Mark 10:38-40. We have to put God first in our lives.
- Luke 12:54-57 – Jesus rebukes the people for not perceiving spiritual things as much as we pay attention to physical things.
- Luke 12:58-59 – Jesus expresses his disappointment in people that would not simply do the right thing.
- Luke 13:1-5 – Tragedies are not necessarily punishments from God. See John 9:1-3.
- Luke 13:6-9 – God gives us time to bear spiritual fruit, but we must take the opportunity.
- Luke 13:10-17 – Jesus heals a woman on the Sabbath and rebukes those who disapprove. This is the king of illogic that comes from going beyond God’s law.
30 min - Galatians, Part 1
- Galatians 1:1-12
- The book of Galatians
- Written about A.D. 57-58. The writer was Paul, but the author was the Holy Spirit.
- Written to the churches in Galatia (Galatians 1:2).
- Galatians 1:1 – Paul affirms that the source of the gospel he is preaching is heaven – not men.
- Galatians 1:3 – This peace is not to come at all costs. In the Old Testament, God allowed the kingdom of Israel to be divided rather than have peace and unity in error.
- Galatians 1:4 – The word “evil” here is translated from the Greek “πονηρός (pon__ēros),” which means “morally bad.”
- Galatians 1:6-7 – Paul is using a play on words here with the words for “different” and “another” to strengthen his point that there is no other

- The five points of Calvinism all depend on each other. They stand or fall together.
- Irresistible grace: the belief that when God chooses someone to be saved, they cannot help but to come to Christ.
- It is not a question of whether the Holy Spirit leads man to salvation, but how He does it.
- He effects:
- The new birth by the Word (I Peter 1:22; John 3:5)
- Cleansing (John 17:17) and sanctification by the Word (I Corinthians 6:11)
- Convicts man of sin by the Word (Titus 1:9)
- Salvation by the Word (Titus 3:5)
- John 8:32; 17:17
- Indwells the Christian by the Word (Ephesians 3:17; Romans 10:17; Colossians 3:16)
- II Timothy 1:14
- Revelation 2:13; II John 1:2
- Romans 1:16 – The gospel is God’s power to save.
- The doctrine of irresistible grace falls because it is built on a faulty foundation and because it undermines the power of the gospel for salvation.
- Acts 7:51; Hebrews 10:29-31 – Both these verses show the doctrine to be false.

- Expose the ugly, empty truth.
- Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 – If you are looking for happiness in worldly things, you will never find it!
- Ephesians 2:10 – We have been created for good works!
- Ephesians 3:14-19 – Strength and glory and power are only found in God.
- Ephesians 4:22-24
- Realize that none of this is new.

- I Timothy 2:9-10 – Problems with modest dress are nothing new!

- Luke 11:37-12:34
- Luke 11:37-54 – Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for hypocrisy.
- Luke 12:1-12 – We must confess God before men.
- Luke 12:8-9 – Confession involves more than just saying you believe in Jesus. It also involves repeating the words of Jesus to others.
- Luke 12:13-34 – Your treasure should be in heaven, not on earth!
- Luke 12:13-21 – Don’t be covetous!
- Luke 12:22-32 – Do not worry about trivial matters. God will provide!
- Luke 12:33-34 – God gives us treasures which never wear out.
