Parents must prioritize.

What is the priority we have for our children?
Deuteronomy 13:6-11 - In the Old Testament, those who inspired rebellion against God were to be stoned.
Who are we trying to please, God or our children? God must be our priority.
Parents must not make The Eli Mistake.
I Samuel 3:18 - The good work of Eli.
I Samuel 2:12-17 - Eli’s sons were worthless men and despised God’s commands. God charged Eli because he did not rebuke his sons. Eli did not go far enough in his rebuke to change their behavior.
Parents must live the life we want our kids to live.
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 - God commands parents to teach their children.
Romans 2:21-24 - We must not be hypocrits. Children will pick up on this!
II Timothy 1:5 - the good examples that Timothy had
Children learn habits from their parents. If we want our children to improve we need to improve.

James 2:2-9 - Do not judge a man by his clothing or his wealth. We should love men because of the way they live their lives, regardless of how much they have.
James 2:10-11 - If we fail in any part of the law, we show that we don’t have proper respect for the law and the one who gave it. One sin is not worse than another in God’s eyes.
James 2:14-17. There is harmony between these passages because both are talking about the same kind of faith, but different kinds of works. Man cannot earn his salvation through good works, but He must obey God’s commandments and carry out the good works God requires of him.

When you love someone, you are going to believe the best about them until you no longer can.
Matthew 5:48 - We are to be perfect in love as God is.

The standards of society also play a role in what is considered modest. If society adopts a more restrictive standard than God has set forth, we should abide by society’s standards to keep from being a bad influence on others.

Proverbs 1:8-10 - The instruction of parents is a great blessing.
Ezekiel 3:4-9 - Sometimes we need to be stubborn in our discipline.
Discipline involves punishment.
Proverbs 13:24 - Corporal punishment is approved by God.
Ecclesiastes 8:11 - A deed not soon punished encourages more wrongdoing.

James 1:19 - It is not sinful to be angry. It is sinful to handle that anger incorrectly. We are to be slow to anger. When we do get angry, it should be with the righteous anger that is of God.
James 1:22. In order to properly receive the word, we have to be a doer of the word and mot merely a hearer.
James 1:25 - “One who looks intently at the perfect law” is the idea of stopping and looking at God’s law, not just a passing glance.

We should take a passage to be figurative when:
A literal understanding contradicts another passage.
It is said to be figurative.
A literal understanding contradicts known facts/common sense.
We should not take a passage to be figurative just because it contradicts our beliefs.
Figures of speech
Types:
Pleonasm (redundancy): “When more words are used than the grammar requires” (Bullinger). Example: That is a true fact.
Hyperbole (exaggeration): “When more is said than is literally meant” (Bullinger). Example: Everybody knows that.
Metonymy (change of noun): “The change of one noun for another related noun” (Bullinger). Example: Let’s get a head count. Example: He couldn’t give up the bottle. Head for ‘person,’ bottle for ‘alcohol.’
Synecdoche (transfer): “The exchange of one idea for another associated idea” (Bullinger). “We speak of the whole by a part, or a part by using a term denoting the whole” (Dungan). Example: He’s running from the law. The word law (the whole) refers to the cop chasing him (the part).
Simile (resemblance): “A declaration that one thing resembles another” (Bullinger). Example: He was hot as a firecracker.
Metaphor (representation): “A declaration that one thing is (or represents) another” (Bullinger). Example: During the time of the judges, Israel was on a rollercoaster.
Parabola (parable, continued simile): “Comparison by continued resemblance” (Bullinger).
Not-But: “The writers of the New Testament have adopted the Hebrew manner of comparison” (MacKnight).

The Holy Spirit used figures of speech to explain heavenly things using earthly concepts. In some cases, figures of speech were used to obscure a message from those it was not intended for. In other cases, figures of speech were used to emphasize particular concepts.
