Our chats will be very conversational, not entirely sensible and with any luck totally enjoyable. It’s hard to believe the 2026 Atlantic International Film Festival is wrapping up today, and I tell you what – if you wanna to have 8 days fly by, just throw a ton of cool parties, host a bunch of wonderful workshops and screen over 100 movies, and it’ll go by in a blink. With so much on the go, you’ve got to know how unbelievable it was for me to score a sit-down interview with today’s guest. Ask anyone and they’ll tell you – he’s a Newfoundland legend. Beyond talented, beloved by all, he’s entertainment royalty here on the East Coast and to top it off, he’s a member of the Order of Canada too. He’s an actor, author, playwright, and comedian and at this year’s film festival audiences enjoyed not one but two of his films. A brand new one – making its planetary premiere entitled SMASH & GRAB: The Rebel Lens of Mike Jones – a documentary for which he served as Story Consultant and in which he co-stars alongside his incredibly hilarious comrades in comedy CODCO complete with never-before-seen footage – from their first foray through to their becoming a household name through to current day, complete with touching interviews from the original cast and those impacted by their talents. He also had a newly restored print of his first feature major movie – the satirical cult comedy THE ADVENTURE OF FAUSTUS BIDGOOD screen at this year’s festival in celebration of the film’s 40th anniversary. So you best believe we’ll talk about all of that and so much more, including how it felt to take a trip back in time to where it all began and get the inside scoop on the oh-so-critical part of the project that was m.i.a. for a good long while. We’ll also talk about his affinity for the homeland, his very funny mother, his truly talented daughter and the one starring role no one’s ever asked him about. Plus we’ll get to 1st Things First, play a very enlightening round of INsights IN 10 and even spin a couple of his favourite tunes along the way. So with all that ahead we best get to it. We heard from the good folks at Canadian International Pictures regarding the newly restored 40th Anniversary edition of THE ADVENTURE OF FAUSTUS BIDGOOD, and in addition to their continued festivals/specials screenings this fall and winter, they are planning to do a proper art house platform theatrical restoration release in the spring of 2027, followed by streaming and a special edition Blu-ray in the fall/winter!

Our chats will be just that – very conversational, not entirely sensible and, with any luck, totally enjoyable. And I must say, any occasion to chat with today’s guest is a true treat. And given her incredible spirit and dynamic drive here on Nova Scotia’s South Shore, our paths have crossed a good many times, as regular listeners of the show will tell you. We’ve connected to salute the legendary White Point Resort when she was leading their marketing efforts, we’ve celebrated a ton of things from Peggy’s Cove all the way to Barrington during her award-winning run as the President of the South Shore Tourism Cooperative, and we’ve certainly united in our great love of lobster during Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl. No surprise then, that we’re connecting today with oodles more reasons to celebrate, including the 5th Annual Harvest Moon Music Festival happening this weekend in the always bustling town of Bridgewater. So we’ll get the scoop on that terrific 2-day event and so much more, including the picturesque park that will provide the venue and mark its own major milestone, the two beloved events that will bookend Harvest Moon and the wonderful community partners who will come together to make this their biggest festival yet. And I just have to say for the record – it’s never lost on me the wonderful opportunity I have had to meet so many phenomenal folks over the years, between the on-screen interviews for the website and TV show and now here on the radio – I’m one lucky lady, I’ll tell ya. And have mercy am I ever fortunate to have interviewed today’s so many times over the years – and I mean with her stellar roster of roles she’s given us all so many reasons to celebrate her incredible talents from her long run on THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES, to her legendary role on HATCHING MATCHING AND DISPATCHING, to her countless turns in TV shows and movies – it’s always a treat to see her on screen and an absolute thrill to be connecting today because it’s in celebration of her debut feature film as a screenwriter for THE SNAKE. It’s a wild ride to be sure of it, with a logline that reads as follows: “When Jamie an ungovernable 40-something wild child, collides with her venomous mother, her life blows up spectacularly, leaving her newly evicted, partially single, and in bed with her best friend’s husband.” And not only did my guest write the picture, but she also stars as that ‘ungovernable woman’ so you best be sure we’ll be talking about all of that and so much more, including the dream team behind the scenes that brought her words to life, the incredible chemistry she had with her director Jenna MacMillan, and the way she felt having THE SNAKE make it’s world premiere at SXSW where she took home the JURY PRIZE for Best Narrative Feature Performance. We’ll also hear how it feels to have THE SNAKE make its Canadian premiere here at home on the East Coast, as this year’s ATLANTIC INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL and find out how it felt to act alongside and duke it out SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE alum Robin Duke. Our chats will be just that very conversational, not entirely sensible and with any luck totally enjoyable. Now, if you’ve been with me since this SEA AND BE SCENE adventure began some 16 years ago you’ll recognize today’s guest as one of my all-time favourites. In fact his first big on-screen role was in an East Coast Smash of a series I covered a ton during it’s 6 season run, and it was wonderful then to chat about his hilarious turn as the sidekick Des Courtney in REPUBLIC OF DOYLE – it has been pure joy watching his star rise to include countless starring roles in major motion pictures and award winning network TV too. In fact in the 12 years since the DOYLE finale there’ve been a non-stop stream of credits for acting, YES, but also for writing and directing too. Case in point his most recent work and the reason he was here in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a few weeks ago. For a special screening of his latest film THE VOICES OF OUR MOTHER which follows a dark chapter “when a family matriarch falls seriously ill, and her four estranged children return home to determine whether she has dementia or is possessed by evil forces.” It’s a supernatural horror in which he not only stars but also serves as writer and director. So indeed, there’s plenty to talk about about this movie including the leading ladies – Canadian screen legend Sheila MacCarthy and Mark’s real life costar Georgina Reilly. We’ll talk about how he came up with the fantastically frightening premise and discover some super cool details on how he managed the breakneck shooting schedule on his Hamilton set and dealt with the final edit amidst filming another movie over seas. We’ll also get the scoop on a few of his many upcoming projects including the crime thriller GOOD IN THE ROOM in which he stars, co-wrote and co-produced with his longtime pal Pat Kiely and the comedy/horror NICE PEOPLE for which he serves as director and co-star alongside Sosie Bacon, Ella Travolta and another dear friend and fellow Newfoundlander Shawn Doyle. We’ll also talk about his onscreen reunion with Oscar Winner Russell Crowe and his continued collaboration with mega award-winning composer Andrew Staniland. Plus we’ll play a custom round of 1st Things First, an epic turn of The Final Countdown and some of his favourite soundtrack music too. So with all that ahead let’s get to it… wait before we roll the interview there are a few things you should know. One – the Halifax hotel where Mark was staying – while lovely was no so great for recording audio, so this chat took place in my car. A show first, but honestly, given the quality of the sound might not be the last. Two – this was recorded back on Saturday, June 6th a week after his beloved Montreal Canadians were eliminated from the playoffs. That note will make sense later. And three – Mark’s schedule was bananas busy that weekend. He’d just flown in from a hometown screening in St.John’s amidst his filming of movie in Montreal and our interview was sandwiched in between meetings so even though I could talk to him for hours on end – our time was VERY limited so while we don’t exactly round out the full hour of our show I will be back at the tail end of the show with a special recap report from the CBMIC HALL OF FAME Ceremonies so stay tuned for that. Okay, I think that’s everything – and now without further ado here’s my long-awaited and wonderful sit-down conversation with the one and only Mark O’Brien.

And how wonderful it’s been to watch the phenomenal response from movie fans across the country to LITTLE LORRAINE. Filmed on Cape Breton Island, the gripping crime drama brings to life the lore of a tiny seaside town turned dark by an international drug smuggling ring run across the sea on lobster boats and on land, in of all things, coffins. So appropos, and have mercy, is it marvellous! The movie marks the debut feature for my guest today, who, after directing music videos for countless artists from Alicia Keys and Keith Urban to Coldplay and Classified had another music track come at him that would change everything. A song from fellow Nova Scotia Adam Baldwin that sparked something in my guest’s storytelling spirit from which an entire film unfolded. So we’ll talk about that moment and so much more, including how it felt make his first movie back home in the province and how that legendary Cape Breton hospitality showed up for him on screen and off. We’ll also hear how he wove music into the project, discover the importance he places in dreams and even get the scoop on his sophomore feature that’ll have him calling “Action!” back here on the East Coast.
