Our chats will be just that very conversational, not entirely sensible and with any luck totally enjoyable. And enjoyable doesn’t even come close to describing the call I had with today’s guest. She sure has been bringing audiences around the globe for decades – in fact, she’s been wowing crowds since the age of 10 – from her mega award-winning fiddle playing to her stellar step dancing and electrifying shows she has most deservedly earned the title of East Coast Superstar and the pride of Cape Breton Island. Well and here’s the best news she along with her husband fiddling great Donnell Leahy and her talented troop of incredible kids are coming home for the holidays with 6 shows here in the Maritimes – so we’ll talk about that and soooo much more! Including her affinity for Christmas and how she’s always close to home in her heart. We’ll also talk about the lovely life she’s created in her own home and how she and Donnell have worked to curate the greatest environment for their now 7 children – from the sweet and spirited youngest Maria to her oldest daughter Mary Francis who’s just recently launched her own solo musical career. We’ll also break news on a not-yet-released specialty product for Christmas AND get the inside scoop the brand NEW book she’ll be releasing next year. Plus we’ll get to 1st Things First, play a fun round of MORE OR LESS and spin as much of her marvellous music as we can within the hour. So with all that ahead we best get to it. Here’s my telephone conversation with the one and only Natalie MacMaster.

So we’ll talk about that sonic journey and so much more – including the incredible roster of righteous artists who collaborated with him on songwriting, his tremendous faith in and fantastic friendship with producer Chris Kirby and how he’s feeling now that this album is finally ready for release. Our chats will be just that very conversational, not entirely sensible and with any luck – totally enjoyable! And I have to tell you today’s guest was an absolute delight. I, like so many folks around the world, have loved her fantastic fiddle playing – and now after great acclaim, lots of awards and 25 years to her credit (if you can believe it) we’ll talk about all the amazing places her career has taken her and the incredible artists she’s met along the way. And only now after a quarter of a century, she’s begun to share another side of her tremendous talents – that of a singer-songwriter with the release of her 3rd solo album THE RIVER SHE KNOWS. So you best believe we’ll talk about how it feels to share that side of her music with fans and the award-winning artist she credits for making that leap. We’ll also talk about her great love for her homeland of Cape Breton and all the wonderful connections that have led to so many different creations including her role as Artistic Director of the Little Church in Big Baddeck concert series. Plus we’ll get to 1st Things First, play an enlightening round of INsights IN 10 and spin as much of her marvellous music as we can within the hour. So with all that ahead we best get to it – here’s my telephone conversation with the one and only Rose Morrison.

Our chats will be just that – very conversational, not entirely sensible and with any luck – totally enjoyable. And now I’m here to tell ya – today’s guest is an artist whose music I’ve been celebrating for as long as SEA AND BE SCENE has been… well – on the scene, so over a ten years to be sure of it. However, it wasn’t until last month – while I was hosting the songwriters’ sessions at the Lunenburg Harbour Folk Festival that our paths would finally cross. It was during the show called NEWFOUNDLAND STORIES AND SONGS that I first heard her play live, and all the magic of her lyrics and the sweetness of her melodies took on an even lovelier tone. An extraordinary blend of folk and country, Americana and Newfoundland’s traditional music – delivered with moving moments amidst great laughs. Finest Kind! At any rate, with well over a decade since she’d first appeared on my radar, I had plenty of ground to cover including her latest project SHOUT FOR MORE, her beyond beloved tune “Stop the Trains,” and what it’s like to be a part of that incredible tapestry of talent there in Newfoundland & Labrador. We’ll also learn who she credits with her stellar storytelling abilities, how she balances a busy schedule beyond the role of an artist and discover the remarkable moment she decided to become a songwriter. Plus we’ll get to 1st Things First, play a long overdue round of INsights In 10 and spin as much of her marvellous music as we can within the hour – so with all that ahead we best get to it. Here’s my telephone conversation with the one and only Sherry Ryan.

Now if you’re a fan of all my SEA AND BE SCENE adventures over the year – you know how much I adore the ATLANTIC INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL. It’s that terrific time of the year when awesome actors, fantastic filmmakers and industry shakers hunker down in Halifax to celebrate cinema. This year’s festival is set to run from September 11th through the 18th showcasing 97 feature and short films at Halifax’s Cineplex Cinemas Park Lane and as is our annual tradition – we’re bringing you the inside scoop on what’s in store for AIFF2024. We’ll connect with the festival’s Director of Programming Lisa Haller to talk about the spectacular lineup of films set to screen, including the amazing slate of creations from all around the world and those made right here on Canada’s East Coast. Speaking of which, our filmmaker in the spotlight for our special this year – is none other than Newfoundland native MELANIE OATES – and I’m thrilled to tell you we’ll be chatting with that SEA AND BE SCENE Superstar whose sophomore feature SWEET ANGEL BABY holds the honour of this year’s ATLANTIC GALA Presentation. As I always say our chats will be just that very conversational, not entirely sensible and with any luck totally enjoyable. Although I’m not sure enjoyable goes far enough when describing the world-renowned annual sailing regatta known and loved round these parts as Chester Race Week, but in today’s show we’re shining the spotlight on all the action-packed excitement in store – on the water and on the shore! The Helly Hansen Chester Race Week 2024 will take place at the historic Chester Yacht Club in the Seaside Village of Chester, Nova Scotia from August 14th through the 17th. We’ll connect with media lead Tara Wickwire to get the scoop on all the Chester Yacht Club hosted events – from race times and award presentations to their stellar line up of live entertainment. And coming up later in the show I’ll give you the complete rundown on the 2nd Annual MORE ON THE SHORE MARKET including the delightful roster of remarkable vendors, the lovely line up of artists set to take the bandstand stage and so much MORE. I mean they don’t call it ‘More on the Shore‘ for nothing. But first I wanted to share a wonderful conversation I had with the Chester Yacht Club’s Rear Commodore, Dave Tzagarakis – with the hopes of get a bit of background on the sailor’s life, the challenges faced by those competing in Race Week and how this gem of an annual regatta really does shine above all the others. To set the scene for our sit-down let me just say – the sun was shining, the ocean breezes were gentle and the junior sailors had just returned to the yacht club for their morning break. So it’ll get a little loud at times but only with the enthusiasm of future racers. Please enjoy the show!

Our chats will be just that very conversational, not entirely sensible and with any luck totally enjoyable and it’s always a treat connecting with today’s guest. From his award-winning broadcast career in morning television in major markets like Edmonton and Halifax to his countless gigs as main stage host at festivals across the country and right here in Atlantic Canada to his work behind the scenes with fantastic flagship events throughout the East Coast – there’s never a dull moment in that guy’s world. And if all that weren’t enough he’s just a couple weeks away from his latest righteous effort ROCK THE FIDDLE 2024 – a three day music festival on the Sydney Waterfront in his homeland of Cape Breton. So we’ll talk about all of that and so much more including – what he believes makes a truly great festival and how the festival scene in the Maritimes has grown over the years. Plus we’ll get to 1st Things First, play an enlightening round of INsights IN 10 and spin a ton of truly cool East Coast Music all throughout the hour. So with all that ahead we best get to it. Our chats will be just that very conversational, not entirely sensible and with any luck totally enjoyable. Now while we’re fast approaching our 7th year here on the radio – it bears mentioning that this EAST COAST CELEBRATION of mine just celebrated its 14th anniversary on July 1st so it’s fair there have been hundreds and hundreds of incredibly talented people who I’ve had the great fortune of interviewing over the years – and while I may have lost count, I do my best to keep track! Especially when someone has a ton of stellar stuff on the go like today’s guest. Who – in addition to his forthcoming feature rolls in the ensemble drama THE PLAYERS and Jason Buxton’s thriller SHARP CORNER – can now be seen on the big screen and streaming opposite Golden Globe Winning superstar Richard Gere in LONGING. Add to that writing, directing and starring is two of his own upcoming short films, not to mention is recent a starring stage role and I’d say we’ve got plenty of ground to cover and then some. Including how he deals with the many hats he has to wear as a busy filmmaker and how he found perspective and joy following much quieter times. We’ll also learn how he feels being home here in Nova Scotia and how his fantastic range as an actor lead to him playing Oscar Winning legend Katherine Hepburn – plus we’ll get to 1st things First, play a long over due round of INsights IN 10 and even spin some of his favourite tunes throughout the hour. So with all that ahead we best get to it. Here’s my telephone conversation with the one and only Wayne Burns.

Our chats will be just that very conversational, not entirely sensible and with any luck totally enjoyable and I’m so happy to report, after years out here being a fan, today’s guest was just as delightful and down to earth as I imagined her being. I say “all these years” because I’ve been a fan from way back in the day. In fact I was there when she and her brothers splashed onto the National Scene after just signing their major record deal, but truth be told – she’s been playing and dancing up a storm since her little feet hit the planet in Sydney Mines Cape Breton. These days her family band’s fan base spans the globe – and after 37 years filled with thousands and thousands of live performances, a ton of TV specials, a steady stream of incredible albums and oodles and oodles of awards they’ve earned the tremendous title of Canada’s Celtic Ambassadors. And while that might be enough for most – today’s guest has just released her very first solo project entitled ANGELS WHISPERS and it’s absolutely lovely. So we’ll talk about all of that and so much more – including how it was she first came to be on a Barra MacNeils project and how it feels to finally have the final say in studio. We’ll also talk about how their cross-country Christmas tour has become a festive tradition for so many and discover the many ways her late Mother lives on in all she does. Plus we’ll get to First Things First. Play an enlightening round of INsights IN 10 and spin as much of her marvellous music as we can within the hour. So with all that ahead we best get to it. You know it’s been a busy year for both of us when the time for our annual Spring Special blew past without us even noticing. Truth is, the timing of our BIRTHDAY edition of SOUNDTRACK (not to mention our most recent MOVING edition) had me thinking we’d filed it, but when I got a note from a faithful listener looking for the year end round up – I thought we’d strike while the iron was still hot – albeit right at the tail end of the the school year, the dance season et. al. Fortunately I was able to sit The Sidekick down before her beyond busy summer to get the scoop on every awesome thing in her life – the year that was, the summer that will be and what she’s most looking forward to as she enters her final year of high school. HAVE MERCY… #dontblink. And what would any show of ours be without our favourite tunes so we’ll throw in some stellar tracks to boot. Sure hope you enjoy the show!

Here’s that video for “Please, Please, Please” starring Sabrina Carpenter and THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN star, Oscar nominated actor Barry Keoghan. Just a heads up – we played the ‘family friendly’ version of this song on the show, but the video below contains very grown up language. Parental discretion is advised.
We played some cool tunes in the show today and they’re all available on iTunes. To add a track to your collection just click on the title – “Time of Our Lives” by Pitbull and Ne-Yo, “Hail to the Cheif” by the US Army Ceremonial Band, “North” Sleeping at Last, “You’re the One That I Want” Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, “Please, Please, Please” by Sabrina Carpenter and “I Had Some Help” by Post Malone and Morgan Wallen.
