Our good friend E joins us on the podcast this week, and she’s brought props! We all dig out our old

journals, photos, and websites to connect with the people we were before we grew up into the frothy

blowhards we are today. As it turns out, we were all GOTH TEENS, with penchants for early internet adoption,

vampire roleplay, and very very cool poetry that was not at all embarrassing. Put on your mesh shirt and lace

up your Docs, because we’re heading down a delightful and slightly humbling memory lane.

With us this week is Allison, a butcher and a musician, and a David Bowie devotee who could almost rival

Katie’s obsession. We talk the sudden loss of the Starman who we thought was an immortal alien, our fandom

history, and how all three of us have connected by playing his songs at various parties and jams over the

years. We get into some uncomfortable but important stuff—how to acknowledge and process the darker side of

our heroes, dealing with the deaths of others and ourselves, and how we might go about leaving this earth

feeling like we added more than we took away.

This week we’re joined by a LEGIT Sea Hag, Karmin, who regales us with her twisty, turny tale of sailing

the open ocean with her father. Years of being a punk rock road dog could not prepare her for the challenges

of squalls, a three hour rotating watch, health scares, and the sheer emotional intimacy of sharing a 39’

craft with a parent as an adult. Shit. Gets. Real. Karmin is an incredibly captivating storyteller, and at

many points we found ourselves unable to contribute anything but “wow” to the conversation. Don’t miss this.

This week,we’re joined by a salty sea dog, our old pal Bob Neubauer, to discuss knowledge sharing,

the problematics of voluntourism, cultural imperialism, and putting condoms on rutabagas deep in

the heart of the Andes. We try to down play his swarthy attractiveness for our own benefit but end

up just calling him a greasy weasel by accident. This one’s a knee-slapper!

Alexa Dredge joins us to discuss what happens when your good idea takes off with you clutching the back bumper.

Alexa and Katie met in the third year of their BAs at SFU and subsequently went on to co-author the Harassment

on Translink project for a 4th year seminar. Almost immediately, the local media ran with the story and the two

undergrads found themselves as the somewhat underqualified mouthpieces for the innumerable folks who had been

sexually harassed or assaulted on transit in Vancouver. The quest for a decent grade on a group project became

an occasionally exhausting multi-year commitment to a public safety campaign. We look at the friendships that are

forged in the fires of activism, how far dark humour can go to offset burnout, MRA hate mail, and how long you can

realistically expect someone to work for free, no matter how good the cause.

On the topic of comfort, we welcome Emily Wight, author of Well-Fed, Flat Broke, professional lady, mum,

and unofficial Snuggie Spokesmodel. We take on the subjects of pants (con), leggings as pants (intensely

pro), self-soothing through fried food, and clandestine pajamas. Chris discovers she's the odd one out

re: bananas. We bodyshame Stephen Harper.
