In "The Highest Height of Christian Experience, Part 2," Pastor Robert McNutt continues his study of Romans 8:16, "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God," asking what the verse means and what it looks like. Interpreting Scripture with Scripture, he draws on John 7:37-39, Romans 5:5, 1 Peter 1:8, and the white stone of Revelation 2:17 to show that Paul describes not merely the Spirit's work in us but the direct witness of the Spirit Himself. He links this witness to the sealing of the Spirit in 2 Corinthians 1:22 and Ephesians 1:13-14 and 4:30, distinguishing the seal, which assures us of our sonship, from the guarantee, the down payment on an inheritance that is already ours but not yet received in full. Pastor McNutt then traces a ladder of assurance: believing the bare promise of Romans 10:9-10, testing our lives by 1 John, and crying "Abba, Father" by the Spirit of adoption in Romans 8:15. Above all these stands verse 16, where we do nothing and the Father does everything, like a father wrapping his small child in a bear hug. If 8:15 is our telling God we love Him, 8:16 is His answering, "I love you." This witness rarely comes by an audible voice, but through Scripture read quietly or recalled at an unexpected moment, through preaching, or as a sweet inner calm, as Spurgeon described. Pastor McNutt calls the unconverted to repentance and faith, and urges believers, on the strength of Luke 11:13, to ask the Father for the Spirit's fuller work, that they might serve in constant obedience to Christ.
