  • Pt 12, Revelation 4:1-5, A Throne In Heaven
In Part 12 of the Revelation Unraveled series, Pastor Byron Chesney begins Revelation chapter 4 with "A Throne in Heaven." As John is given a glimpse into heaven, the first great thing he sees is not angels, mansions, or departed loved ones, but the throne of Almighty God. This message emphasizes the sufficiency of Scripture, the sovereignty and faithfulness of God, and the comforting truth that no matter how chaotic this world may appear, there is still a throne in heaven, and God is still sitting upon it.

  • But God Will Redeem My Soul
Does the grave keep any power over the soul of the man who dies in the Lord? Read verse 15 and ask whether God redeems the psalmist from the grave or from "the power of the grave" (Psalm 49:15). Then ask how He does it, and read Revelation 6:9 to see where the souls of the slain are found. "But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me." (Psalm 49:15)

  • He Taketh Away
Who takes away the branch that bears no fruit, and was that branch ever in Him? Read "every branch in me" (John 15:2) beside "He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him" (John 6:56), and ask whether "in me" ever describes a man who never believed. Then ask what a man must do to have God take away his part out of the book of life: write a new Bible, or only decide that one verse does not apply to him. "And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." (Revelation 22:19)

  • "Homeward Bound: A Wonder of Grace"
Is the Old Testament primarily about God's law, while the New Testament is primarily about God's grace? Were Old Testament saints saved by obeying God's law, while New Testament saints are saved by faith in Christ? Is the Old Testament only about Israel, while the New Testament is to do with Christ and His church? No to all. Those conclusions, however common, are far too simplistic. "Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, (Jesus) interpreted to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures," Luke 24:27 (LSB). The Bible in its entirety is God's revelation of His grace toward sinners in Christ. So we do well to read every book in light of God's saving purpose fulfilled in Christ. The story of His grace in salvation unfolds progressively and comes into full view in the life of Jesus. In his field guide for suffering saints, Peter reminds his readers that the prophets of old saw the promise of Christ and searched diligently to know more of God's grace in salvation. The apostles, too, proclaimed the Christ whom God's people had long been expecting, and who had at last come in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Even holy angels marvel at God's grace in the gospel, peering into the wonder of God restoring fallen image-bearers like you and me. So great is our salvation, Peter exclaims, it encompasses privileges "into which angels long to look," 1 Peter 1:12 (LSB). And the gospel is the good medicine we badly need when life in this fallen world darkens our horizon. This Lord's Day, we'll return to our study of 1 Peter and its doxology in chapter 1, verse 3-12. Join us as we consider, "Homeward Bound: A Wonder of Grace." Prep
