  • Ten Commandments: Gifts of Grace
PM sermons are preceded by a Confessional, Catechism, Historic Creed lesson, or a lesson from the NT (Usually 5 minutes or so) Heidelberg Catechism Q86 Since we have been delivered from our misery by grace through Christ without any merit of our own, why then should we do good works? A. Because Christ, having redeemed us by his blood, is also restoring us by his Spirit into his image, so that with our whole lives we may show that we are thankful to God for his benefits, so that he may be praised through us, so that we may be assured of our faith by its fruits, and so that by our godly living our neighbors may be won over to Christ. Q91 What are good works? A. Only those which are done out of true faith, conform to God's law, and are done for God's glory; and not those based on our own opinion or human tradition.

  • The Third Use of the Law in the Christian’s Life
This sermon explores the third use of the law in the Christian life, defined as the rule of gratitude. It contrasts the natural state of unthankfulness described in Romans 1 with the renewed life of thankfulness commanded in Colossians 3. The central argument is that salvation is not merely about being saved from sin but about being saved for service, where believers present their bodies as living sacrifices in response to God's mercies. Drawing from the Heidelberg Catechism, the message emphasizes that good works are the necessary fruit of faith, serving to assure believers of their salvation and to witness to neighbors. The sermon concludes with a sobering warning that a life devoid of gratitude and obedience indicates a lack of true faith.

  • Take Heed to Yourself
This study explores the theological structure of Deuteronomy as a covenant renewal between God and Israel, emphasizing the unique authority of God as the sole sovereign ruler. It highlights the historical context of Israel's journey, including their rebellions and God's consistent judgments and mercies, to demonstrate why God has the right to demand obedience. The text examines the Ten Commandments not merely as legalistic rules but as instructions rooted in love that reveal human sinfulness and the need for a Savior. By contrasting Israel's past failures with God's faithfulness, the message underscores that true righteousness is enabled only through the Holy Spirit and the atoning work of Christ. The overall tone is instructional and pastoral, urging listeners to recognize God's nearness and to respond with reverent faith and love.

  • "No Other Gods"
This sermon introduces a series on the Ten Commandments by examining the purpose of the law and the specific demands of the first commandment. It establishes that while Jesus fulfilled the sacrificial requirements of the law, He confirmed its moral authority, calling believers to love God with their entire heart, soul, and mind. The central argument posits that the reason for obedience is the redemption accomplished by Christ, who purchased believers with a price, thereby making them God's property. The message urges the congregation to view wholehearted devotion not as a burden but as a natural response to grace, manifesting in the consistent obedience of God's Word and the prioritization of spiritual commitments over worldly distractions.

  • The Law-Keeper
The Israelites stand at the base of Mt. Sinai as God continues to arrest their attention with shocking sights and sounds. There is thunder and lighting. There is fire and smoke. There are many sounds of loud trumpet blasts. The mountain is quaking...and the people are quaking too. In that intimidating and impressive environment, God articulates His righteous ten commandments. These commandments outline what relating rightly to Him and others looks like. With great fear and trembling, the people receive the commandments and begin reckoning with God's standards and their accountability for them. This passage provides another brilliant foreshadowing of the Gospel as it begins to outline the Law through which God's people will be both governed--according to the enforcement of it--and exposed as in need of deliverance--since they will all be in violation of it, in one way or another. They need a substitute, one who can keep the Law, not just the letter of it, but the spirit of it. They also need one who can absorb their penalty for failing to keep it. They need an "Exodus," a "Way Out," and that way out is Jesus. As Galatians 4:4-5 says, "When the fulness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law." Jesus is the fulfiller of the Law and the one who sets us free from its demand and curse. He is the one we can trust as we endeavor to love God and others and yet fall short over and over again. He is the Commandment Keeper.
