  • The Son(s) of God
If you write off the "Sons of God" in Genesis 6 as merely ungodly men in the Bible, you are in good company with men like Calvin, Luther and Augustine. Not so fast! What does the rest of Scripture have to say about these Sons of God.

  • Behold My Servant
There are 27 chapters of consolation in the later part of the book of Isaiah, running from chs 40-66. These chapters have been variously described. Someone called them 'the fifth Gospel'; Augustine said: Methinks Isaiah writes not a prophecy but a gospel'. Polycarp, a disciple of the apostle John called these chapters: 'the golden passional of the Old Testament'. These 27 chapters can be divided into 3 equal sections of 9 chapters each. These 9 chapters each end with similar sentiments: Section 1 chs 40-48; note the ending ch 48:22. Section 2 chs 49-57; note the ending ch 57:21. Section 3 chs 58-66, note the ending ch 66:24. These closing statements of each section highlight the exclusion of the wicked from the blessings that are found in the Messiah. There will be no peace for the wicked. Their end will be the place where the worm will not die and the fire will not be quenched. In each of these three sections there is a prominent personality. In the first section it is Cyrus, ch 44:28,45:1. In the second section it is the Servant of Jehovah. In the third section it is restored and converted Israel. Within these 27 golden chapters Isaiah 52:13-Isa 53:12 lies at the very centre.

  • Nancy Guthrie: Near the Cross
My guest on the program today will be Nancy Guthrie. Nancy has a passion for sharing God's Word through her growing national and international Bible-teaching ministry. She has worked in the Christian publishing industry for more than two decades and is the author of Holding On to Hope, The One-Year Book of Hope, Hoping for Something Better, and When Your Family's Lost a Loved One. This collection of readings, drawn from the writings and sermons of 25 classic and contemporary theologians and Bible teachers, focuses on the wonder of Christ's sacrifice. In a culture where crosses have become little more than decorative accessories and jewelry, how easy it is for even the most well-intended Christian to rush from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday without thoughtfully contemplating the cross and all that it means. Yet we miss out on spiritual riches when we do. So that we all may linger at the cross during the Lenten season-and stay near it the whole year through-editor Nancy Guthrie has compiled this special anthology. It draws from the works and sermons of classic theologians such as Luther, Edwards, Spurgeon, Ryle, and Augustine, and from leading contemporary communicators such as John Piper, R. C. Sproul, Francis Schaeffer, John MacArthur, Skip Ryan, and Joni Eareckson Tada to help readers enter into an experience of Christ's passion and anchor their hope in the power of his resurrection. Each essay in this collection holds to a high view of Scripture and expounds on a particular aspect of the Easter story using the appropriate Scripture passage from the ESV Bible.

  • Letters of Samuel Rutherford (Complete and Unabridged) 8 of 64
Rutherford's actual letters start on message 9 of 64. This message (#8) contains part of Andrew Bonar's 'Sketch of Samuel Rutherford.' Rutherford was one of the Scottish commissioners to the Westminster Assembly and has been acknowledged by many Reformed theologians since his time as a theological genius of the first order. Walker said of Rutherford, 'It is not easy to find any one in Church history with whom to compare this remarkable man... a man of power, I may say of genius, fresh, bold, penetrating, to whom no subject came amiss, teeming with intellectual energy, distinguished for his learning, but never cumbered by it, the greatest scholastic of our Presbyterian Church, and yet we are told, the plain and faithful preacher, the fieriest of Church leaders and the most devout of saints, equally at home among the tomes of Aquinas, and writing letters to a poor congregation. Altogether a sort of intellectual, theological, religious prodigy!' (Theology and Theologians of Scotland 1560-1750, p. 13). Men graced with Rutherford's abilities, intellect and faith come but once or twice a millennium. Augustine, Calvin and Gillespie are others of this class.
