  • The Fruit of Our Justification
This sermon explores the doctrine of sanctification as the necessary fruit of justification, emphasizing that true faith inevitably produces holy living. Drawing from 1 Thessalonians 4 and Article 24 of the Belgic Confession, the speaker clarifies that while believers are saved by faith alone, this faith works through love to generate good works pleasing to God. The message warns against moralistic preaching that relies on human effort, instead pointing to the Holy Spirit as the source of sanctifying power. It encourages believers to pursue holiness not for merit, but to glorify God and rest in His grace. Ultimately, the sermon affirms that salvation is a complete gift from God, resulting in a transformed life marked by obedience and hope.

  • Released from Bondage
All of Romans 7 is about a Christian's relationship to the law of God. Verses 1-6 declare that Christians are released from bondage to the law in order to serve in the new way of the Spirit. Verses 7-13 say that the law is good and righteous and holy and, yet, the law brings death. This has been the case since the Garden of Eden when a specific command brought Adam and Eve into death. How does what is good bring death? By the deceptiveness of sin, "Sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me." We can think of Satan's deception in the Garden of Eden, "You will not surely die." Sin's nature has not changed. Then verses 14-25 describe a Christian's ongoing struggle with sin. Sanctification is "progressive," meaning it is ongoing throughout life. This is one of the great mysteries and trials of life. Finally, the first four verses of Romans 8 declare the absolute victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death.

  • Discipline Yourself for Godliness - 7/12/26
Does godliness just happen? Shouldn't we just "Let go, and let God?" How do we avoid "legalism" while fulfilling the biblical mandate to "make every effort…" How do we understand the doctrines of grace as they apply, not merely to our justification, but also to our sanctification? How can we be truly godly? In this 9-week Adult Sunday School course, we will explore Paul's admonition in 1 Timothy 4:7 for Timothy to "discipline (train) himself for godliness." We will be looking at the role of spiritual disciplines as practiced by the church throughout its history that have shaped the lives of the godly. The goal is to learn the paths of discipline and the "habits of grace" unto which godliness is the end that God might be glorified, honored, and enjoyed among us. Severn Run Evangelical Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), devoted to the pursuit of Scripture, prayer, fellowship, and worship as we seek to faithfully reach our community for Christ.

  • 1st Corinthians 15.12-19 - The Resurrection & The Gospel Part 2
The sermon examines the critical importance of the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ as presented in 1 Corinthians 15. It argues that denying the resurrection renders Christian faith empty and leaves believers without hope or justification for their sins. The speaker contrasts this biblical truth with modern theological errors and liberal interpretations that reject core doctrines. Emphasizing the death, burial, and resurrection as the complete gospel, the text warns against associating with false teachings. Ultimately, the message affirms that Christ's victory over death provides the only valid foundation for eternal life and Christian hope.
