During a routine afternoon in March of 1997, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department would receive a strange call. The man on the other end of the phone rang to inquire as to who to speak to in order to provide an anonymous tip. When the Sheriff’s Department asked what the tip was about the caller said “This is regarding a mass suicide, and I can give you the address”.

Heavens Gate, a religious cult created by Marshal Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, is one of America’s strangest and most unusual tragedies. How could such strange philosophies convince so many people to drop everything in their lives and believe in UFO’s and fictional beliefs? Even more shocking, what lead to the mass suicide…
