Public Safety Measures Announced for 2019 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

Public Safety News Briefing

WHAT: The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Public Safety Team and leadership representing the entities helping to make Balloon Fiesta Park the safest place in New Mexico will provide a briefing. The briefing will address the issues of public safety, traffic and on-site preparedness.

WHO:  The private, federal, state and local entities represented at Balloon Fiesta Park for the nine day event includes:  The Balloon Fiesta Public Safety Team, Albuquerque Police Department, Albuquerque Fire Rescue, Bernalillo County Sheriff Office, New Mexico State Police, New Mexico Department of Public Safety, Rio Rancho Department of Public Safety, Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Marshal Service, Sandia Pueblo Police Department, Bernalillo Police Department, City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation, City of Albuquerque Emergency Management, 64 CST-WMD, New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, United States Department of Homeland Security, United States Customs, New Mexico Mounted Search and Rescue, Bernalillo County Fire Department and other organizations.

Balloon Fiesta Park

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta’s mission is to conduct the world’s premier ballooning event while renewing friendships and promoting camaraderie among all participants and promoting the sport of ballooning, the City of Albuquerque and the State of New Mexico, nationally and internationally.

Event organizers for the 48th Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta (AIBF) presented by Canon made announcements on September 22nd related to public safety measures that will be implemented for the 2019 event.  Specifically, the event will be adding metal detectors, increasing bag check stations and increasing involvement from local state and federal law enforcement agencies to provide an environment where guests can enjoy the event with greater peace of mind.

Best Practices for Guests

There will be bag checks; the fewer items guests have, the faster they will get through the security line. Guests without bags to check will be able to get through the security process faster than guests with bags, chairs and coolers.

Balloon Fiesta Law Enforcement Presence

The Balloon Fiesta Public Safety Team coordinates a multiagency presence at Balloon Fiesta Park that includes more than 20 federal, state and local law enforcement, first responder and government agencies to ensure that the annual event is a safe place for its pilots, guests, volunteers and employees.

Aviation/Drones

A four-mile radius of the airspace around Balloon Fiesta Park is controlled by a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR).  This area is controlled by the Federal Aviation Administration. The only aircraft allowed in this area around Balloon Fiesta Park includes authorized hot air balloons, gas balloons, helicopters and fixed wing aircraft.  UNAUTHORIZED DRONES ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE BALLOON FIESTA AIRSPACE. Flying unauthorized aircraft within the TFR is a federal offense.

Friday, April 12th… I was wrapping up the week, when an email crosses my screen titled “Albuquerque Police Department Investigation Updates”.  It includes a quote from Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller that starts “Our city has faced a spate of senseless violence this week, as we attack crime from all sides throughout Albuquerque…” the quote continues and then the news release starts to list a series of violent crimes.

Wednesday April 10, 2019 was the one day of the seven when Albuquerque residents didn’t kill one another.
