Last month (August 2024), JEB celebrated 46 years of sobriety, and he is a retired Licensed Professional Counselor. In an interactive session, we will explore what has been for JEB the most important part of Step 12 practicing the Steps as a program of living, applying what we first learn as we clean up the wreckage of our past. In Step Twelve of Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, Bill wrote about this lifelong practice, “Here we begin to practice all the Steps in our daily lives so that we and those around us may find emotional sobriety.” This session will present a Personalized Version of the Steps, based upon the actions Bill described on pages 60 through 88, minus the make-believe old ideas, with questions we can ask ourselves in measuring our progress. He called this “a spiritual program of action,” choosing the word “principle” to emphasize that we now have principles for living, “a course of action." (The true meaning of both step and principle in 1939)

Alcoholism is a family disease. If you have been impacted by another person's drinking, Al-Anon is for you, whether that person is still drinking or not. Come share the experience, strength and hope of panel members, who each have different relationships with the disease of alcoholism: some as parent, adult child, or spouse of alcoholics, and some recovering alcoholics who are dual members of both Al Anon and AA.

October 2024: This month's speaker tour is instead Secular AA's Biennial General Membership Meeting, held on Sunday October 6th, 2024. During this session, general membership votes were held on:

• the location of ICSAA 2026,
• nominated members to the Board of Secular AA,
• and ratification of Board-amended Bylaws.

This is an open and welcoming meeting and should be interesting for anyone, newcomer and long-timer alike (or just curious).

What a great talk by Dr. Jamie Marich based on her studies, practice and lived experience with addiction, recovery, the 12 Steps and Trauma. Hosted/introduced by Zanner, Jamie tells the ICSAA 2024 Orlando crowd that they had their Dr. Jamie Marich dress and PowerPoint professional presentation upstairs; after sitting through day one's chill-vibe, she thought that frayed gene shorts, a "Sober is Sexy" T-shirt and a talk from the heart was more in order.

Not only is Dr. Jamie a recognized clinical professional and author, but their candid shares from lived experience as a trauma survivor and a person with mental health challenges in long-term recovery from addiction. Unafraid of controversy, she will also boldly speak to where her field and society at large gets it wrong about mental health and recovery. Her multi-layered perspective allows her to feel at home in front of diverse audiences as she addresses how to heal our history of wounding in new and creative ways that lead to emotional, spiritual, vocational, and interpersonal flourishing.

The International Conference of Secular AA first started in Santa Monica in 2014, then called We Agnostics & Freethinkers International AA Conference, went to Austin in 2016, Toronto 2018, online (Zoom) 2020 (when Washington was cancelled due to COVID), 2021, 2022, 2023 and live again in Orlando September 20th to 22nd in Orlando.

From research done and reported @ Rebellion Dogs Publishing, Joe C (Toronto Beyond Belief Agnostics & Freethinkers AA group) looks at the evolution of measuring efficacy of AA and other recovery from substance use disorder and a framework to measure recovery that comes from studies of people who thrive after mental health traumas and conditions - post-traumatic gains!!

Trysh Travis is a professor of Women's Studies and History (U of Florida) who focuses on:

• gender 
• popular cultures in the 20th-century United States
• the culture of addiction and recovery. 

Dr. Travis writes, and blogs about self-help, "mental hygiene," and alcoholic equalitarianism, and her current project is tentatively titled "Feminists on Drugs: A History." Trysh has presented to AA History Lovers and been a guest on Rebellion Dogs Radio, talking about the history of women in AA. In 2009, her first book was published,  The Language of the Heart: 12-Step Recovery from AA to Oprah Winfrey 

Sunday morning at the International Conference of Secular AA, Trysh Travis talked about AA in the age of polarization. She looked at critiques of AA from within and without, both the conservative and liberal talking points. Finally, she asked the ICSAA crowd, what's next, and how do we see AA's future?
