  • 022 ADHD Coaching & How You Think
Thinking about how you think and paying attention to what you are paying attention to are just two of the tactics that ADHD Coach, Lynne Edris, and I talk about during our time together.
Lynne has been coaching for a decade now and she shares her insights into an industry, which is often misunderstood, about a condition, which has been, at times, equally as misunderstood.
The bottom line for her is that it's the most rewarding way she could spend her time. Witnessing the sense of hope that grows from acceptance and feeling heard and understood, is what fuels her passion, as she primarily works with clients from professional fields like education, medicine, and law.
    LYNNE'S AWESOME QUOTE:
"Life's not about just crossing stuff off some to-do list."
    How You Think
Lynne and I talk about a lot of aspects to coaching including how some people find themselves stuck and don't realize that they even can change the way they think or feel about a situation. How you think isn't as much about controlling your thoughts as they are directing them.
Listen in, as she shares her experience of transitioning from successful business woman to a stay-at-home mom and what were some of the challenges she overcame. After talking with Lynne, I feel like she and I share a lot of the same perspectives on challenges that ADHD can bring to how you think. I bet you walk away with food for thought!

  • 021 Strategies To Help ADHD & Overcommitting
René Brooks knows what it's like to have a hard time saying no. A people pleaser by nature, she and I discuss strategies to help ADHD and overcommitting.
From agreeing to help a friend in a bind to taking on more and more jobs that involve crochet, René finds it difficult to tell someone that she just has no time and cannot help out right now.
What happens is that she commits to projects that even she isn't sure she'll really be able to do, but saying no just doesn't feel right. After all, she does truly want to help.
    RENE'S AWESOME QUOTE:
"Saying yes to everybody...that's a big fault of mine."
    ADHD & Overcommitting
René and I talk about why it's so difficult for her to say no and come up with three strategies that could be used in order to avoid the negative spiral that starts by never saying no.

  • 020 How ADHD Medication Helps Me
Diagnosed with ADHD as a child, Sean Wallace has experienced life with ADHD medication and life without it. With the prospect of going back to school, at 23, he decided he really needed the help, and so was re-diagnosed as an adult.
What surprised him was that on the proper dose, all of the reasons he hated ADHD medication as a child disappeared.
He wants others to know of his experience in case it sounds like theirs. Sometimes, second chances can bring surprising results.
    SEAN'S AWESOME QUOTE:
"When you're not taking medicine, it's not that it's not manageable but it makes things harder than they really have to be."
    ADHD Medication Helps
Sean Wallace read an article of mine, The Process of ADHD. I had shared it on my FB page. His response was so powerful I asked him to come on the show and share it with you. Here is an excerpt from his original post:
"I was diagnosed ADHD the summer before 6th grade. I was prescribed Adderall and I hated taking it, I never ate, my mouth would always be dry, I couldn't sleep and It made it hard to make friends because I was so quite all the time (usually I would be talking up a storm and getting in trouble) I would trick the nurse at school and pretend to take it because I didn't like it that much. The positive side to that was I would go from straight F's to straight A's in a matter of weeks, I would clean my house, be good, I never procrastinated, I was nicer. It worked miracles. Come to find out I was just taking way to high of a dosage..."

  • 019 Another Side To ADHD
No matter how many people you talk to, there's always another side to ADHD to explore, because each individual is unique. Larry Goodman, as no exception, is his own man. He knows what he's good at and what he's bad at, and he thinks he's figured out why.
He and I talk about how he's made a living in the past and his plans for the future. We also talk about his past relationships and how he plans to make future ones better.
Interestingly, these two subjects converge. So, listen in and discover how.
    LARRY'S AWESOME QUOTE:
"If you love somebody ... you love them for who they are and who they're not."
    Another Side to ADHD
For all the reasons Larry enjoys life and his passion projects, there's also another side, which he shares with us. It's the side that makes life frustrating, makes people annoying, and makes it difficult to feel understood. Advanced ADD, as he calls it, can make life hard.
I appreciated Larry's insights into what another side to ADHD is, the difficult side. I also appreciate his willingness to be open about his feelings, which I know so many share.

  • 018 Parenting & Positivity With ADHD
Liz Lewis has a lot to offer as a mentor...she's a teacher, freelance writer, Mom, wife, has ADHD, and is busy creating a lifestyle brand for others like her!
Her message is one of positivity about being a parent, having ADHD, and shedding the stigma that she felt as a child having to go to the nurse's office every day at school in order to take her ADHD medication.
She has a Facebook Page and website by the same name, A Dose of Healthy Distraction, and is all about building up a community of like minded women who find themselves busy with work, family and getting distracted.
    LIZ'S AWESOME QUOTE:
"... you don't have to be ashamed ... tell the people close to you."
    Parenting & Positivity
Did you know that ADHD runs in families? So, often the parent of a child with ADHD has it themselves. What happens then? According to Liz, it's a lifestyle, a "crazy, disorganized, eccentric lifestyle." Be sure to check out her blog and sign up for her newsletter!
She promises her emails are non-annoying and infrequent, what more could you ask for?

  • 017 Do It Afraid: ADHD Confidence
Kanisha Howard has a level of confidence that serves her well. Even at times when she's had her doubts and fears, her motto has been, "Do it afraid."
Kanisha Howard has been hard at work as both a student teacher and musician. I caught up with her while she was on her way home from school, which is one of the few moments she gets to think and reflect before she has to be back on again either working or studying. An accomplished musician, Kanisha can play piano, clarinet, e flat contrabass clarinet, drums, and percussion including the triangle. She can also sing!
    KANISHA'S AWESOME QUOTE:
    "Do it afraid."
    ADHD Confidence
Rather than becoming paralyzed when insecure, Kanisha has learned to let her fear drive her into action and she shares with me examples from her past, which inspire me and I bet you too!

  • 016 ADHD's Emotional Impact
When it comes to talking about ADHD's emotional impact, including the barriers that prevent us from initiating a task or taking a risk, there's no one better than Brendan Mahan. His educational background includes a masters in education and school counseling and he both has ADHD and coaches others with it.
Currently, he's transitioning from teaching to coaching and speaking full time and shares with me his goal of completing the requirements, this year, to join the National Speakers Association. His next gig will be soon in Reston, Va, at the ACO Conference (The ADHD Coaches Organization).
    BRENDAN'S AWESOME QUOTE:
"It's not about being all or nothing, it's about being 10% better.”
    Emotional Impact
Brendan gives us a sneak peek into the model he uses to help others understand the emotional impact of ADHD. It's called the Wall of Awful and there are only 4 ways to get beyond it. Listen and learn, which ones are healthy and which ones aren't and which one you should use especially with your child!
