Welcome to this Flashback Friday episode talking about marriage & ADHD Awareness. Please join me with Tom and Yvonne of The Tom Nardone Show podcast. Theirs is a marriage made in heaven and honestly, they are some of my favorite people.
In this episode, we talk about hair, bras, dieting, garbage, cleaning…I think Tom even enrolled me in the Gangsta Radio Network!
(He even talks about what he learned through coaching!)
Here’s the direct link to purchase Tom’s book, Chasing Kites at Tomnardone.net/book
YVONNE'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“That’s the secret…it’s that we don’t sweat the the small stuff.”
Marriage & ADHD
When both partners have ADHD, are they more understanding of one another? I think with Tom and Yvonne the answer is…sure, sometimes. Overall? Probably. No, definately.
I encourage you to listen to their podcast and hear for yourself.
Pretty much, Yvonne and I drive this bus and Tom’s along for the ride, lol. Not exactly the role he’s used to.
I can promise you laughs almost every minute as they share their magic, which is their connection.
If you were looking for a more academic look at marriage and ADHD, keep looking. This couple is just being themselves and letting us in.

Scott Latty knows that ADHD is misunderstood. He’s out to change that. As he and I discuss, sometimes you do have to help yourself first in order to help others, but sometimes in helping others, you end up helping yourself.
In this episode, Scott shares details that are all too familiar for folks with ADHD. He has trouble focusing, attending to details, and engaging with routine tasks like ironing and filing.
Yet, there is that spark of genius that shines brilliantly when encouraged.
That’s why he knows getting this film out there is important. He knows it’s a lofty goal, but thinking big is something he’s really good at!
SCOTT'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“I remember thinking to myself … I don’t focus, my brain is going round in circles and I can’t control it.”
ADHD Misunderstood
Scott recounts the feeling of never being understood. He explains, that even in how he expresses himself at times can be frustrating; hence, the title of his film, Misunderstood.
Although he knows that on occasion he comes off as argumentative, on the inside he’s thinking, “Listen to what I’m saying,” because he wants to be heard.
The misunderstandings that come from missed social cues and a racy mind can take their toll, but he keeps up a good attitude as he shares some very poignant, and sometimes funny, stories from his life. You’ll have to listen to hear them.
Although the film never speaks of ADHD, it is the underlying issue. Scott’s message is “Accept it,” and talk to us. ADHD and other mental conditions do not mean a person has no talents or value.
I encourage you to go visit Scott on Facebook and let him know you heard him here and what your thoughts are on what he’s doing or, better yet, ask how you can help him.

How productive avoidance works is by considering how to make use of down time. It’s all a judgement call on your part; what should be done versus what will get done.
My partner in crime, Brett Thornhill, is my cohost on The ADD Couple. Check us out on iTunes!
He joins me in discussing everything through the ADHD lens on that show. So, I’m sharing this episode about productive avoidance with you and hope you’ll enjoy it and subscribe to both podcasts: The ADD Couple and See in ADHD.
AWESOME QUOTE:
“I found myself back, knowing in my head there was a whole bunch of stuff I should be doing, but still trying to avoid them.”
Productive Avoidance
You know when you get back from vacation, that feeling that you’re not quite ready to go back to your daily routine? Or, it could just be Monday, and you’re coming off a great weekend, not feeling the level of motivation you know you need to get back into the swing of things?
Brett and his family went on vacation and had a fabulous time together. It was really hard to get his head back into work. As he says, he went into avoidance mode.
Listen, as we discuss avoidance, prioritizing, judgement, Sunday Gut, and how we deal with emotional stress.

Here to explain the ADHD ability gap is Andrew Akre. Diagnosed in grade school, his experience offers him a unique view, which he uses to help his ADHD clients. As an ADHD Coach, he knows the difference between the pitfalls that come from unmanaged ADHD verses the successful outcomes that are possible through treatment.
His stories are great! He even describes the one, most important life-altering sentence he heard that forever transformed the way he thinks. Now, he's connected the dreaming part of his brain to the planning part of his brain, and the conversation those two halves are having are creating endless possibilities!
ANDREW'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“The dreaming and planning parts of my brain started to talk to each other, for the first time, and I learned so much about myself and gained a lot of ability.”
The ADHD Ability Gap
The ability gap is the difference between where the person is now in their abilities and what you are asking of them.
The job of parents, teachers, and coaches is to bridge that gap. Andrew and I go over a few ways to do that.
First of all, put steps in place that are reachable. In addition, shift your language to emphasize effort and growth.
He details the benefits of having a growth mindset and the WOOP strategy!
And, that's just during the first half of our time together. Andrew and I also delve into the topic of time-blindness, or as he says, time literacy.
