The wacky 80s scifi sitcom series continues with a true gem of the genre: ALF (1986-1990). Have you ever wondered what your life would be like if you HADN’T crashed your spaceship into the garage of a “typical American family”? Well, you’re about to find out!
This week begins the three-part series on wacky 80s scifi sitcoms and we’re kicking off with a real bang! Small Wonder (1985-1989) forces Amy and Sarah to confront their feelings about poltergeists AND child labor.
The gals finish talking about Jurassic Park (1993) this week. It turns out, even by the end, they still know nothing about DNA or real information about dinosaurs. What they do learn is that being in a traumatic situation makes misanthropic academics like kids.
After a brief hiatus so Sarah could move, the gals come back with a massive two-parter! Take a listen as they walk through one of the most beloved scifi-horror movies ever made: Jurassic Park (1993). In part one, we get to see just how little either of them know about DNA.
Amy was so ruined by The Cell, she demanded a palate cleanser. And what could be more cleansing than a show about teens working on a dude ranch? This week the gals talk about the tenuous ties to scifi in an episode of Hey Dude (1989-1991). Get your shovel!
This week marks a truly epic moment in the history of SYNWiS — Amy hates The Cell (2000) more than any other movie or show ever discussed! It throws Sarah for a loop and both gals aren’t entirely sure how to recover.
This week the SYNWiS gals take a look at the British scifi sitcom Red Dwarf (1988-present). Perhaps the most burning question that comes out of this episode is: how many different types of milk are there and would you drink them?
This week the gals talk about a movie that tested both of their limits: Amanda & the Alien (1995). If you like discussions of what makes a scifi "comedy" or what was "sexy" in the mid-90s, then this episode is for you. If not, then join us for the lengthy discussion of how unlikeable the titular character is.
In honor of our big 75th episode, we have our third guest commentator and it’s the gals’ mom! Nancy, Amy, and Sarah talk about the American classic sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961-1966). It might surprise you to learn that Rob and Laura had to figure out what to do if aliens invaded New Rochelle.
Sarah was saving this movie for a special moment and that moment finally arrived. But, it turns out, she didn’t remember Tron (1982) quite as well as she thought and Amy pays the price. Even so, both sisters agree that this is a real feast for the eyes.
