What happens when the Aldous Huxley classic gets a 21st century television update? Turns out, an extremely blah depiction of the 26th century. This week, the gals talk about an episode of Brave New World (2020); a series that has already been canceled.
Have you wondered what kinds of thoughts your pets have? What about what life forms on other planets? Well, this week’s movie is for you! The Cat from Outer Space (1978) shows us what it might be like if cats were the most mentally advanced life form in the galaxy. Strangely, there was barely a mention of sitting in boxes or laser pointers.
This week Amy and Sarah explore a future where teens compete in a talent competition for the honor of themselves and their families: Utopia Falls (2020-present). Think Hunger Games meets X Factor, but much more fun than both because the teens in this show discover the genre of hip-hop. Come for the drama, but stay for the excellent cameo at the end.
Ever wonder what time travel would be like for someone who wasn’t White? This week’s movie, See You Yesterday (2019), answers that question. Turns out, time travel is mostly a bummer when you’re Black. Listen as Amy and Sarah talk about a very good time travel movie that’s also about race in contemporary America.
This week we tread into the waters of one of Sarah’s most feared realms: puppetry (specifically marionettes)! The gals talk about the beloved cult classic Thunderbirds (1965-1966) and get a lot of opportunities to think about miniatures and puppet glasses. The Tracy family also saves a real, grade A douche.
Feeling run down? Like every day is the same as the one before? Was it like this even before the pandemic? If so, then this week’s episode is for you! Amy and Sarah chat about a real comedy gem that ALSO involves time loops and alternative realities: Groundhog Day (1993).
Amy and Sarah talk the big questions this week. Is there an afterlife? How old is too old? Are you romantically obsessed with your grandparents? Based on the work of Philip K. Dick, this week’s episode of Electric Dreams (2018) “Impossible Planet” delivers on a number of fronts.
It’s been awhile since the SYNWiS crew has done a true sci-fi classic, so it seemed high time to talk about a movie that’s seeped into almost every aspect of pop culture: Planet of the Apes (1968). Listen as Sarah happily discovers that Amy didn’t hate this movie and actually seemed to enjoy it. Sweet, sweet success, but will it last?
This week we join Sarah on a genre journey she began on her own: Korean sci-fi TV series. My Holo Love (2020) is a mini-series that explores some of the possibilities of AI and hologram technologies with great success and even better production value. Check it out!
So nice we did it twice! This week, Amy, Raffe, and Sarah are STILL talking about Suburban Commando (1991). Why? There are just too many sight gags and nonsense to get through efficiently. Join us for a deep dive into the very early 90s.
