I had a goal to have my house ready for rent by my 32nd birthday

Things were slow until I made some big decisions and stopped trying to do everything on my own...

Over the years I have spent over $20k on coaching and personal development (and I guess this is not even counting the books, audibles, MasterClass, and all the other programs not top of mind).

Here's my #1 piece of investing advice: investing in YOURSELF is the #1 investment you can ever make.

Ain’t no stock, mutual fund, crypto token, or real estate investment that will ever beat an investment in yourself.

There is uncapped ROI when you bet on yourself,

And a better you will ALWAYS beat any market.

This can come in many shapes, forms, and sizes:

• Personal trainer in the gym

• Nutritionist or quality food system

• Taking a skill-specific course

• Or simply taking some time off for yourself

Personally - I made a decision last year to invest in my own career development by joining Ian Koniak’s development program: Untap Your Sales Potential

It was the most money I’d ever invested in myself, and I was pretty nervous.

The kicker, however, is I made back my money in the first month in the program.

The next 11 months was simply playing with house money.

And the next 70 years… who even knows.

They say interest compounds.

Well so does learning.

Never stop learning.

About a year ago I had a terrible quarter when I was working at DocuSign.

One of those seasons where nothing goes your way:

• Deals slip

• Timing’s off

• Budgets freeze

• Commits go Closed/Lost

• Confidence plummets

In baseball we call it a slump, and I was pushin’ that Mendoza line.

Anyway, I let myself feel what I needed to feel in order to process what happened, and the very next morning I sat down with a pen and this yellow piece of paper.

And I got to work.

Wrote down any “Sales Fundamental” I could think of that has helped me in the past.

And here’s what I came up with:

• Be engaged!

• Active Listening - LISTEN!

• Always schedule a next step

• Be responsive

• SIMPLE FOCUS: build pipe & close deals

• Time Blocking + Execution

• Daily Dials - 10 calls before 10am• Plan Your Attack, Attack Your Plan

• Follow-Up Emails -> immediately

• Avoid social media & digital distraction

• Always Ask for the Offer (AAFTO)

• Meetings (High Value) -> Pipeline -> Closed Deals

• Keep LEARNING!

• HAVE FUN!

Since I wrote this list, I’ve either hit my number each quarter or been pretty damn close. And more important than the number, I feel really proud about the inputs.

I also noticed something interesting…These seem less “sales” focused and more just “how to excel at really anything you want to do and achieve in life”…There’s definitely a couple sales & business specifics in there, but looks like a pretty solid list for overall personal growth and being a professional.

“Please don’t try to go over it. Just go around.”

Me talking to myself about the sprinkler when mowing the lawn a couple week’s back.

So what did I do? Of course, tried to go up and over.

And absolutely demolished the sprinkler head. Nice. Set out to just mow the lawn and now have an entire sprinkler system to fix.

After cussing myself out for the first 30 seconds (more like 15 minutes), I kept mowing and then decided that this was the perfect opportunity to learn a new skill.

You know, adopt an opportunistic mindset like we often talk about and turn a negative into a positive.

(Easier said than done)But when we can take a breath, remove emotions, and stay neutral, we can choose to RESPOND instead of simply reacting.

So I finished mowing, collected the shrapnel, and started watching a YouTube video on how to fix sprinklers.

Then, I had a breakthrough idea:Let’s work smarter, not harder, and ask someone who actually knows how to do this instead of trying to figure it out on my own.

So I went and knocked on my neighbor's door, he assessed the situation, gave me my marching orders, and off I went to plug the hole and head to Ace Hardware.

I returned with my prized possession and excited to learn how to fix this thing. Not only did we fix it, but I learned how the entire irrigation system works along with some incredible personal stories we would have otherwise never connected on.

As with anything in life, how we deal with inconveniences and adversity tolerance will dictate the quality of our life and outcomes we create.Event + Response = Outcome

(Key word, “Response,” not reaction)
