Guess who’s back?!?! Suzie’s back for the conclusion of Eastern Airlines Flight 401 which means you should be back too!! When we left off, Flight 401 had drifted so low to the ground that by the time anybody in the cockpit noticed it was too late.  Captain Loft powered up the engines and turned the jet left, intending to head back toward Miami International Airport but the left wing clipped the ground and the state-of-the-art jet tumbled across the Florida Everglades as a ball of fire ripped through the fuselage.  In Part II, we discuss the harrowing experience that the Passengers and crew experienced that night including tragic deaths and remarkable survival stories that never would have happened without small meaningless choices that had been that day.

A late night short-haul flight from JFK to MIA on December 29, 1972 started off smooth with no expectations that when it touched the ground not only would it NOT be at the Miami International Airport, but it also wouldn’t be in any place where a commercial jumbo jet should be landing at any point.  Take off and the entire duration of the flight all the way to Florida ended up being completely uneventful as the seemingly brand new Lockheed L-1011 Tristar jumbo jet carried passengers and crew south from the cold temps in NYC to a much warmer south Florida.  Many passengers were either headed home after the Christmas holiday or were flying down to ring in the New Year just a few days later.   Not a single soul on board the flight that evening would have known the danger that lurked ahead of them which ultimately stemmed from the malfunction of a small but extremely important indicator light.  Suzie is back in the pod loft this week as Hav provides initial details of the devastating disaster that would ultimately claim the lives of 101 people and send shockwaves across the aviation industry.

Sh*tbag Spring on SIP continues (and hopefully concludes) today!  Rebecca (Becca) Aylward had big dreams and ambitions even at the young age of 15.  She desperately wanted to dowell in school so she could eventually go on to study law and someday hoped to become a barrister in the UK.  She wasthe oldest of 3 kids and had an exceptionally close relationship with her mother, who felt like Becca was the glue that held their little family unit together, even in the darkest of times.  Little did Becca, or her family know, that the truly darkest time in their life had manifested itself in the form of a 16-year-old boy named Joshua (Josh) Davies.  Over the course of a few years, Josh seemingly became a part of the family as he spent time getting to know Becca with the two of them eventually dating for a few months before Josh abruptly ended things.  Becca was shattered but she picked herself up, knowing she was destined for better things. Fast forward several months, Becca got a text from Josh saying that he wanted to meet up with her, alluding to possibly restarting their relationship.  Sadly, this meet-up would coming with a very devastating end.  Join Hav and Jackie as they discuss the Tragic Murder of Rebecca Aylward.

Myra Thompson had meticulously planned her bible study lesson as this was going to be the first of many that she would be leading at the Mother Emmanuel church in Charleston after being ordained as a minister earlier in the afternoon.  She wanted this evening to be perfect, just the way she liked everything else to be in her life whenever she was in control.  Unfortunately, her path that evening would cross with Dylann Roof, a flat-out racist POS who thought his own calling was to start a race war against the black community. Myra and the others welcomed Dylann with open arms that evening.  Little did they know that things would never be the same. Hav and Ethan conclude the Charleson Church Massacre in this episode and discuss the truly heinous acts Dylann Roof committed against a peaceful church community that was simply wanting to gather and talk about the bible which they were so passionate about.

Side SIPisode!! August of 1971, Dr. Philip Zimbardo kicked off his study looking at how  social situations and institutional environments can influence human behavior in drastic ways. He posted a simple, short ad in the local papers looking for young male candidates to take part in his study. Zimbardo hoped to learn the impact that a group in power could have on a group stripped of all freedoms.  Little did he know at that time, his experiment on human behavior would quickly deteriorate into complete and utter chaos.   The lessons the rest of the world learned, as a result of Zimbardo and his experiment, continue to be discussed to this day.
