Hij is misschien wel de meest succesvolle gamer die Nederland ooit heeft gekend, in ieder geval de beste Hearthstone-speler. Thijs Molendijk werd tweemaal Europees kampioen met het virtuele kaartspel en haalde in 2015 de halve finale van het WK.

Hij is nog steeds competitief Hearthstone-speler maar legt zich tegenwoordig meer toe op streaming en content creation. En dus heeft hij eindelijk tijd om plaats te nemen achter de microfoon van de podcast SEG Stories voor een goed gesprek met host Joost Hofman.

Thijs spreekt onder meer openhartig over zijn schooltijd, die niet altijd even prettig was voor hem. “Ik was introvert, werd gepest en ontwikkelde een eetstoornis. Van m'n tiende tot m'n zestiende was gewoon geen leuke tijd. Mijn plezier haalde ik uit gamen en ik werd steeds beter.”

In 2018 won hij tijdens een groot toernooi een Aston Martin, een prestigieuze Engelse sportbolide. “Een prachtige auto, maar ik dacht: wat moet ik ermee? Daarom koos ik voor een mooi geldbedrag.”

Een van de hoogtepunten uit zijn carrière was toen hij in 2015 Europees kampioen werd. “Opeens begonnen er in dat stadion 10.000 man te applaudisseren. Ik was nog steeds zo gefocust op de wedstrijd dat ik het niet doorhad. Toen dacht ik: wauw, dit is fantastisch.”

He may well be the most successful gamer the Netherlands has ever known, at least the best Hearthstone player. Thijs Molendijk became European champion twice with the virtual card game and reached the semi-finals of the World Championship in 2015.

He is still a competitive Hearthstone player, but nowadays he focuses more on streaming and content creation. And so, he finally had time to sit down behind the microphone of the podcast SEG Stories for an in-depth conversation with host Joost Hofman.

Thijs speaks candidly about his school years, which were not always easy for him. “I was introverted, got bullied and developed an eating disorder. From age ten to sixteen just wasn’t a fun time. I found joy in gaming and kept getting better.”

In 2018, he won an Aston Martin, a prestigious English sports car, at a major tournament. “A beautiful car, but I thought: what am I going to do with it? So I chose a nice sum of money instead.”

One of the highlights of his career was becoming European champion in 2015. “Suddenly, 10,000 people in that stadium started applauding. I was still so focused on the match that I didn’t even notice. Then I thought: wow, this is amazing.”

Topsportprogramma CyclingClassNL en internationaal managementbureau SEG gaan nauw samenwerken in de begeleiding van Nederlands wielertalent. SEG verbindt zich voor drie jaar aan CyclingClassNL als performancepartner en sponsor. Gezamenlijk doel is om Nederlands wielertalent optimaal voor te bereiden op een carrière als profrenner. 

CyclingClassNL is een topsportprogramma voor de meest talentvolle wielerjunioren van Nederland. De jonge renners volgen dagelijks een trainingsprogramma en krijgen daarnaast begeleiding op het gebied van voeding en persoonlijke ontwikkeling. 

De samenwerking houdt in dat SEG zijn Performance Lab en Cycling Lab in Amsterdam openstelt voor de renners van CyclingClassNL. Zij kunnen daar voortaan gebruikmaken van alle diensten: onder meer inspanningstesten, aerotesten, bikefits en performancebegeleiding op topniveau. Inspanningsfysiologen, sportfysiotherapeuten en voedingsdeskundigen staan klaar om persoonlijke begeleiding te bieden.

Het gaat goed met Willem (de Bruin), bekend als de helft van rapduo The Opposites en van zijn succesvolle solowerk. In de SEG Stories podcast van deze week vertelt Willem over zijn geslaagde gastoptredens op Lowlands 2025, over hoe anders hij naar het leven kijkt dan tien jaar geleden, en over zijn nieuwe albums die in de maak zijn: één solo en één met The Opposites. 

Zijn nieuwe soloalbum wordt het eerste na Man in Nood uit 2018, waarin hij rapte over zijn persoonlijke demonen. Met het nieuwe album sluit hij die donkere periode definitief af. “Wat er tien jaar geleden is gebeurd en hoe ik toen was, daar zit ik nu totaal niet meer met mijn hoofd. Het nieuwe album wordt heel anders. Er zit veel meer licht in, de energie is veel hoger. Veel invloeden van de Cariben.” 

“Man in Nood was een periode. Mijn oeuvre bestaat niet alleen uit depressieve liedjes. Het grootste deel bestaat uit: fok it, let’s go en nu gaan we met z’n allen gewoon helemaal kapot. Daar wil ik naar terug. Gewoon keihard beuken. Met The Opposites maar ook solo.”

Hij heeft vrede gesloten met de chaos die soms in zijn hoofd zit. “Ik besef dat in de knoop zitten erbij hoort. Het kan iets moois zijn waar je vurig en enthousiast en met liefde in kan zitten. Ondertussen probeer ik ook een beter mens te worden. Hoe ouder ik word, hoe meer ik erachter kom dat ik weinig afweet van het leven, en hoe interessanter het wordt.”

Van publiekslieveling bij Feyenoord tot succesvol bondscoach van Zweden. In de SEG Stories podcast van deze week haalt Jon Dahl Tomasson herinneringen op uit zijn carrière als speler en geeft hij en passant een masterclass coachen.

Jon Dahl speelde vanaf 1998 vier seizoenen bij Feyenoord. Rotterdam bleek een stad te zijn die hem past als een warme jas. “Een rauwe stad. Ik hield daarvan. En nog steeds, want ik woon er.” Andere herinneringen aan de Maasstad? “Op de Coolsingel ‘Hand in hand’ zingen na het winnen van de UEFA Cup. Ik weet de complete tekst nog uit mijn hoofd.”

Bij Heerenveen leerde Jon Dahl van trainer Foppe de Haan hoe een coach met zijn spelersgroep moet omgaan. “We spraken er veel over als ik bij hem in de auto zat. Enige nadeel: Foppe had de gewoonte mij aan te kijken als hij aan het vertellen was, terwijl hij met 120 km per uur over de snelweg reed. Dat was een beetje gevaarlijk.

Als bondscoach van Zweden kreeg hij de opdracht het zwalkende nationale elftal weer op de rails te krijgen. Dat lukte. “De basis van coachen is kennis van je spelers. Ik volg met mijn staf continu 55 spelers. We kijken en analyseren alle wedstrijden, bijna tweeduizend per jaar. Vermoeiend? Helemaal niet. Ik ben gek op het spelletje. Ik hou van mijn vrouw en mijn twee zoons, maar ik heb een levenslange liefdesrelatie met voetbal.”

Jon Dahl Tomasson - “I watch almost two thousand matches a year”

From fan favourite at Feyenoord to successful head coach of Sweden. In this week’s SEG Stories podcast, Jon Dahl Tomasson reflects on his playing career and throws in a masterclass in coaching while he's at it.

Jon Dahl played four seasons at Feyenoord, starting in 1998. Rotterdam turned out to be a city that suits him like a warm coat. “A rough city. I loved that. And I still do — I live there.” Other memories from the city on the Maas? “Singing ‘Hand in hand’ on the Coolsingel after winning the UEFA Cup. I can’t sing, but I still know the lyrics by heart.”

At sc Heerenveen, Jon Dahl picked up valuable lessons on team management from coach Foppe de Haan. “We had lots of discussions in the car during trips. The only downside: Foppe had the habit of looking at me while he spoke, even when he was driving 120 km/h on the motorway. That was a bit dangerous.”

As Sweden’s national coach, his task was getting the struggling team back on track. And he succeeded. “The foundation of coaching is knowing your players. Together with my staff, I continuously monitor 55 players. We watch and analyse every match—almost two thousand a year. Tiring? Not at all. I’m madly in love with the game. I love my wife and my two sons with all my heart, but I have a lifelong love affair with football.”

Na een jaar op huurbasis bij N.E.C. werd Youri Baas in augustus 2024 weer warm onthaald bij Ajax. Hij kende een prima seizoen, tot de 2-2 in Groningen die als een mokerslag aankwam. In aflevering 10 van de SEG Stories podcast vertelt Youri hoe hij die knotsgekke laatste maand van de competitie heeft beleefd. 

“We stonden zó ver voor met nog zó weinig wedstrijden te gaan. Het verval begon tegen N.E.C. en Sparta, maar de klap kwam in de uitwedstrijd tegen Groningen. Na de wedstrijd zat iedereen verslagen en doodstil in de kleedkamer.” 

Ook het onverwachte vertrek van Farioli raakte hem. “Je ziet de trainer en de assistenten bijna vaker dan je ouders. Als zo iemand dan opeens vertrekt, is dat best pittig. Maar zo gaat dat in de voetballerij.” 

Juist Farioli gaf hem aan het begin van het seizoen het vertrouwen. “Bij de eerste training wees de trainer opeens: Jorrel links en ik centraal. We keken elkaar aan: andersom toch? Maar hij had zich niet vergist. En het werkte perfect.”

Youri is leergierig en vastberaden zich als jonge verdediger verder te ontwikkelen. Hij kijkt scherp naar hoe de routiniers het aanpakken. “Ik kan veel leren van bijvoorbeeld Virgil van Dijk. Hij hoeft maar een keer iets te zeggen en iedereen weer waar hij moet staan. Hij is heel dwingend en direct in zijn coaching. Dat wil ik ook bereiken.”

Youri Baas - “Farioli leaving was pretty tough” 

After a year on loan at N.E.C., Youri Baas received a warm welcome back at Ajax in August 2024. He had a solid season—until the 2–2 draw in Groningen, which hit like a sledgehammer. In episode 10 of the SEG Stories podcast, Youri shares how he experienced that crazy final month of the league.

“We were so far ahead with so few matches left. The decline started against N.E.C. and Sparta, but the blow came in the away match against Groningen. After the game, everyone was devastated and completely silent in the dressing room.”

The unexpected departure of Farioli also affected him. “You see the coach and assistants more often than your own parents. When someone like that suddenly leaves, it’s pretty tough. But that’s how football works.”

It was Farioli who gave him confidence at the start of the season. “During the first training, the coach suddenly pointed: Jorrel on the left and me in the centre. We looked at each other like, ‘Shouldn’t it be the other way around?’ But he hadn’t made a mistake. And it worked out perfectly.”

Youri is eager to learn and determined to keep developing as a young defender. He pays close attention to how the veterans approach the game. “I can learn a lot from someone like Virgil van Dijk. He only has to say something once and everyone knows where they need to be. He’s very commanding and direct in his coaching. That’s the level I want to reach too.”

Voetbaltalenten Gerald Alders en Olaf Gorter werden hechte vrienden bij Ajax Onder 18 en Jong Ajax. Gerald (20) speelde afgelopen seizoen op huurbasis bij FC Twente en keert na de zomer terug naar Ajax. Olaf (20) verhuisde in 2024 naar het Primavera-elftal van het Italiaanse US Lecce. In deze aflevering van SEG Stories leren we deze twee slimme voetballers beter kennen – jongens die qua interesses allesbehalve in het standaardplaatje van een prof passen.

Ze verdiepen zich in politiek, discussiëren graag over maatschappelijke thema’s en gingen samen op vakantie naar de minder doorsnee reisbestemmingen Australië en Singapore. Gerald speelt daarnaast heel verdienstelijk piano. Het zijn details die hen onderscheiden van veel leeftijdsgenoten.

Host Joost verwondert zich over de doordachte antwoorden van Gerald. Heeft hij misschien politieke ambities? Gerald: “Politiek lijkt me best leuk. Misschien ooit, op lange termijn. Voor nu richt ik me volledig op mijn doelen in het voetbal.”

Het gesprek gaat ook over het tragische ongeluk van hun teamgenoot Noah Gesser in 2021. Gerald vertelt wat Noah voor hem betekent: “Hij had zoveel drive, hij wilde het zo graag. De kans om zijn carrière te beleven is hem ontnomen. Ik kan dat nog wel en wil er alles uit halen, met Noah als voorbeeld.”

Hun ultieme droom? Olaf: “Het WK winnen.” “En de Champions League”, vult Gerald aan. “Dat zijn de twee grootste dromen van iedere voetballer. Je moet groots dromen om het ook te kunnen bereiken.”

Gerald Alders en Olaf Gorter - “Our interests don’t really fit the footballer stereotype”

Football talents Gerald Alders and Olaf Gorter became close friends during their time at Ajax U18 and Jong Ajax. Gerald (20) spent last season on loan at FC Twente and will return to Ajax after the summer. Olaf (20) moved to the Primavera team of Italian club US Lecce in 2024. In this episode of SEG Stories, we get to know these two sharp-minded footballers a bit better — players whose interests go far beyond the typical footballer stereotype.

They take an active interest in politics, enjoy discussing social issues and recently went on holiday together to the less conventional destinations of Australia and Singapore. Gerald is also a skilled pianist. These are the kinds of details that set them apart from many of their peers.

Host Joost is struck by Gerald’s thoughtful answers. Does he have political ambitions, by any chance? Gerald: “Politics actually sounds quite interesting. Maybe one day, in the long run. But for now, I’m fully focused on my football goals.”

The conversation also touches on the tragic passing of their teammate Noah Gesser in 2021. Gerald shares what Noah means to him: “He had such incredible drive, he wanted it so badly. The chance to live his dream was taken from him. I still have that chance, and I want to make the most of it — with Noah as my inspiration.”

 In 2024 sloeg SEG de handen ineen met beeldend kunstenaar Selwyn Senatori – de creatieve geest achter onze rebelse jubileum-slogan WE HAVE THE BALLS. Selwyn, geboren in Italië en nu een opvallende verschijning in Amsterdam, staat bekend om zijn scherpe stijl, positieve energie en eigenzinnige kijk op de wereld. 

Host Joost Hofman spreekt met Selwyn onder meer over thema’s als ego en arrogantie. Hoe ziet Selwyn zijn positie in de kunstwereld? “Ik heb altijd het idee dat ik geen Champions League speel en nog altijd Keuken Kampioen ben. Daar is niks mis mee, ik ben overal geweest in de wereld, ik heb mijn kunst aan iedereen verkocht. En toch heb ik altijd het gevoel dat ik nog moet rammen en maken en presteren.”  

Regelmatig verwerkt hij kreten als ‘Champagne in the Morning’ en ‘Out of Office Forever’ in zijn kunstwerken. “Eenvoudige kreten, maar juist daardoor zo krachtig en herkenbaar voor velen. Ze staan voor vrijheid, voor niet willen conformeren. Want we doen allemaal maar wat, we volgen als schapen — maar dat hoeft niet.”

Selwyn is vader van vier kinderen en een stuk rustiger geworden sinds hij samen is met Irene. Hij vertelt: “Ik gooi mijn werk nu over een andere boeg. En toen mijn moeder onlangs overleed, viel – gek genoeg – alles op z’n plek. Ik werd rustiger. Ik belandde in een soort vacuüm, en daarin vond ik een vorm van rust waar ik al lange tijd naar op zoek was.”

Selwyn Senatori - ‘Champagne in the morning’ is all about freedom

In 2024, SEG teamed up with visual artist Selwyn Senatori – the creative mind behind our bold anniversary slogan WE HAVE THE BALLS. Born in Italy and now a vibrant figure in Amsterdam, Selwyn is known for his sharp style, infectious energy and unique view on life.

Host Joost Hofman talks with Selwyn about themes like ego and arrogance. How does Selwyn see his place in the art world? “I always feel like I’m not playing Champions League but still stuck in the second division. And that’s totally fine. I’ve been all over the world, I’ve sold my art to everyone. But somehow, I still feel like I have to grind, create, and prove myself.”

He often includes phrases like “Champagne in the Morning” and “Out of Office Forever” in his work. “Simple phrases, but that’s what makes them powerful—and relatable. They’re about freedom, about not conforming. Because let’s be honest, most of us are just going through the motions, following the herd. But we don’t have to.”

Selwyn is a father of four and has found more peace since being with his partner Irene. “I’ve taken a different approach to my work now. And strangely enough, when my mother passed away recently, everything kind of fell into place. I calmed down. I landed in this vacuum—and in that space, I found a kind of peace I’d been searching for for a long time.”
