  • Episode 43: 5 reasons why success is on the other side of emotionally letting go
    Welcome to the SPS Podcast
Success is on the other side of emotionally letting go

“Just keep in mind: the more we value things outside our control, the less control we have.”

    – Epictetus

Mastering how to let go emotionally unlocks success.

Unfortunately, you don’t get taught how to do this.

Here are 5 pieces of advice that will help business owners let go so they can grow:

    #1: Stop working crazy hours

When you’re stuck, you think working endless hours matters.

It’s not until you burn out that you think, “What am I doing?”

It took me years to realize crazy hours weren’t improving my growth.

Let go of the idea that hours worked = results.

#2: Walk the path of surrender

You are taught there are only 2 ways to solve problems.

    • Work harder
    • Work smarter

But as you continue on your journey, you’ll learn that neither of these fully accomplishes your goals.

What you need to do is also let go of specific outcomes

#3: Letting go is simple but not easy

How do you let go of desire and attachment?

A few things that helped me:

    • Adopting a flexible mindset

    • Knowing that letting go does not mean not taking action

    • Having a clear vision but being okay with detours to get there

    #4: Let go to grow

    A quick story:

The hardest part of my journey was when the results I wanted didn’t come. I was experiencing:

    • Anger
    • Overwhelm
    • Frustration

But I missed the progress I had made.

This taught me to stop chasing and let go.

    When I did, everything changed.

#5: You have to stick with it

Change happens slowly, and then all at once.

In the beginning, don’t be surprised if you experience:

    • Ego resistance
    • Difficult emotions
    • Limiting beliefs

This is part of the process.

Every business owner I know who learns to let go grows.

    Going deeper:

Letting go of your desires and attachments is essential to a successful life.

If you want to explore this topic further, I recommend two authors to checkout.

David Hawkins and Micheal Singer both have several fantastic books on this subject.

    Welcome to the SPS Podcast.

Episode 42: 7 fundamentals of personal leadership

“Getting lost along your path is a part of finding the path you are meant to be on.”

    ― Robin Sharma

This week February 2023 is the 10th anniversary of my personal development journey.

But the story of getting here starts a few years earlier.

In 2011, I bought Robin Sharma’s book The Leader Who Had No Title.

I was working a $14.95 retail management job. It was at a record store which was fun, but something inside me told me I should be learning more.

One day, I walked into a bookstore and a large display was advertising Robin Sharma’s book.

    The universe always provides.

I thought this book was about becoming a better work leader or manager. The book then sat on my shelf for two years. I got a buzz of accomplishment from just buying the book.

You have also been there… don’t lie to me…haha.

In early 2013, I was conversing with a client named Dean at the high-end clothes store I was then working.

I was about 6 months into the new commission sales job and it was tough. To be honest I was thinking of quitting.

Dean was a business owner, realtor, and did some life coaching on the side. He sensed I was not 100% happy in my role. He started asking me questions about my goals for the year.

    I stumbled.

    I didn’t have an answer.

There I was a man in his early 30s. I had no concrete goals. I couldn’t tell a successful entrepreneur any short- or long-term plans.

    I was a little embarrassed.

Now, Dean was being accommodating and gracious with his time.

We stood and spoke for over an hour. He told me about the power behind goals. He mentioned many books to read and names of people to follow.

One name sounded familiar. But I couldn’t remember why.

Later that night, I remember being at home, lying on the bed, watching a TV show on my laptop.

I looked across the room to my bookshelf. BOOM. There was one of the books Dean had mentioned.

The Leader Who Had No Title.

    I started reading it.

I was hooked. The book is about a man around the same age as me who was lost and drifting. He goes on a series of trips with a stranger and meets a bunch of impactful mentors.

It was the right book at the right time. I felt like the book was talking to me.

It taught me the foundations of personal development.

While the book has many lessons, I was drawn to the 7 fundamentals Robin Sharma sets out.

    7 Fundamentals of Personal Leadership

    1. Learning
    2. Affirmations
    3. Visualization
    4. Journaling
    5. Goal Setting
    6. Exercise
    7. Nutrition

    A road map to success.

I finished reading the book within a few weeks. The fastest I had ever read a book in my life. I was motivated and wanted to start all 7 habits.

I started getting up early, meditating, reading more books, and of course journaling.

Those 7 fundamentals changed my life.

In 2013 I was promoted twice in the store I worked and finished just below 6 figures in earnings.

It was a huge leap forward for me. I nearly doubled my earnings from the previous year. I was on a new path in my life.

Fast forward to today and I can look back and see the exact moment it all clicked.

It was this book. It was these habits. It was one conversation with a guy named Dean I barely knew and a book by a guru called Robin.

“When the student is ready the teacher will appear. When the student is truly ready... The teacher will Disappear.”
    ― Tao Te Ching

  • Episode 40: Are you pulling on the wrong levers in life? (A personal story episode)
Are you focused on the right levers?

    Welcome to the SPS Podcast

“Big doors swing on little hinges.”

    -W. Clement Stone

    “Your store is closing.”

Those words rocked my world in March 2011.

My visa was up for renewal. I didn’t have time to get a new job. I would be deported from Canada.

12 years later, I look back and smile at one of my life’s most defining and stressful moments.

    But what happened?

    The shock:

I was planning a trip back to the UK and Ireland and had requested time off.

I saw my regional manager calling. I thought I was getting the green light for an extended vacation. The call took a much different turn.

    “Your store is closing.”

“I am not sure I have a job for you.”

    The panic:

Losing a job is scary enough but having to leave a country hit hard.

My girlfriend at the time was in tears. Even if I got a new job, my visa application would start from scratch again. I only had a few months left and everything was linked to my current job.

Everything felt out of my control.

    The reality:

I was the newest manager in the region.

I was 100% sure I was done. There were several managers with years of experience ahead of me. But I had one saving grace.

My store and I were top of the region for store cards sold.

The store card was my regional manager’s core focus.

    The rumours:

A week passed, and I heard others managers had “left.”

Either they were let go, or they walked. Every time the phone rang at the store, I got a little nervous. Is this the call that will change my life?

It was like living on a knife's-edge.

I can honestly say it was the most stressed I'd ever been.

    The 2nd call:

The day arrived, and the phone rang “Oh f**k here we go.”

“Stephen… how would you like to work in this other store.”

I can’t tell you how quickly I said yes. It was like scoring a winning goal in the last minute of injury time. I was over the moon.

I would get to stay in Canada.

I would have time to finish my Visa process.

    What saved me:

    The store cards did.

I wanted to impress and succeed in my new job. The regional manager was obsessed with the new store card. A lot of older managers didn’t buy in.

I made it my goal to dominate the store card leaderboard.

I was the top-selling manager, and my staff were also top of the leaderboard.

    The lesson:

Find the levers that create the most impact.

In every role since I look for what’s important:

    • What makes you money?

    • What matters to the boss?

    • What is busy work and distraction?

    • What matters most to your business?

Following this rule, I went from a retail manager making a little over $30k a year to succeeding in 6-figure corporate leadership roles.

It gave me the confidence to become a business owner and coach.

“Big doors swing on little hinges.”

5 reasons why as a solopreneur I focus on BIG levers in my business:

    (Personal breakdown of my thoughts)

    1) I find and focus on the high-value and high-$$$ levers because this is the only way to ensure my business is continually growing and bringing in the $$$.

    2) Regularly monitoring and adjusting these levers helps me make data-driven decisions and stay ahead of bumps or barriers that come up.

Without data, I don’t know what levers to pull. I don’t know what actions to take. I could back the wrong risk.

You need to review your data.

    3) Identifying and prioritizing the most impactful areas of my business drives significant ROI.

If I know the right levers, I will take the right actions. I will take more shots because I have targets in sight. I will score more goals.

My goal is to work fewer hours while creating more positive results.

    4) By focusing on these high-value levers, I can reduce wasted time, improve my lead generation, close rate, and increase sales.

This gives me a sense of confidence in my ability to scale my business. I also have a good coach behind me who calls out the levers I am missing.

We all need a good coach in our corner to help us take more action.

    5) I devote time and resources to these high-value and high-dollar levers because I am setting my business up for long-term success and stability.

I didn’t start a business to fail in 6 months or move on to something new in a year.

I want to create a sense of security and satisfaction in a bigger, better future I created out of thin air.

  • Episode 39: Fixing your emotions comes before optimization

Welcome to the Self-Performance-Strategies (S-P-S) Podcast

Let's talk about why you fix your emotions before you optimize.

“One of the biggest traps for smart engineers is optimizing something that shouldn’t exist.”

    Elon Musk

“There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.”

    Peter Drucker

Being a business owner is a challenging and rewarding experience.

It requires you to manage a range of tasks, from marketing and customer service to finances and product development.

You often end up with a lot on your plate.

There is a temptation to try and solve all your problems with hacks and optimization strategies.

However, in order to be successful in business, it is more important to be aware of your emotional barriers and how to manage them.

I fell into this trap early on in my journey.

I got into bio-hacking and optimizing my days.

    And I learned a lot:

    I improved my sleep

I learned how to get into deep focus

I learned how to manage my energy

But while I moved towards my goals, I always hit barriers.

I would be on a roll for a few weeks, but then something would throw me off, or I would self-sabotage.

After a couple of years of this cycle and a few metaphorical punches to the gut, I realized:

Knowing how to deal with your emotional barriers is essential to achieve your desired success.

The emotional barriers you face as a business owner are often rooted in your past experiences that led to a lack of confidence, fear of failure, and self-doubt.

These emotional barriers can prevent you from taking risks, exploring new opportunities, and working on the right activities in your business.

By acknowledging and dealing with these emotional barriers, you can open yourself up to new ideas and opportunities and ultimately help you reach your business goals.

But how do you deal with these barriers?

The first step to dealing with emotional barriers is to call them out.

This can be done by reflecting on past experiences, identifying what triggers certain emotions, and learning how to manage and control them.

Once these emotional barriers have been identified, you can work on developing strategies to address them.

One effective strategy is to practice mindful self-reflection.

Taking the time to step back and assess your feelings and reactions can help you understand the barriers you are facing and how to best address them.

This can also help identify any underlying issues that may be contributing to the emotional barrier.

Another strategy is to practice positive self-talk and affirmations.

    Do you use affirmations?

Yes, I do. I find them helpful in challenging negative thoughts and beliefs.

Using affirmations and positive self-talk can break down emotional barriers and replace them with positive and productive thoughts.

It might sound out there to some, but your inputs 100% affect your outputs.

If your mind constantly creates a negative life narrative, it will affect you.

It can also be helpful to reach out for support when needed.

Talking to a trusted friend, coach, or professional can provide a safe space to process and work through any emotional barriers.

Managing one’s emotional barriers is essential to scale your business.

When you can identify their emotional barriers and develop strategies to manage them, you are more likely to take risks and explore new opportunities.

This can lead to increased profits, greater customer loyalty, and a more successful business.

Once you remove the emotional barriers, you can then optimize.

Because you now operate without those barriers, which makes you feel like you're driving without the brakes on.

    I have seen this happen.

Often, high achievers like business owners don’t see their gains and wins.

They are often held back mentally and emotionally by their barriers.

One client I worked with was a successful entrepreneur.

They had started several successful businesses, and one of their goals was to give back and help young people become entrepreneurs.

But they thought they needed more experience.

This client had more experience than most people who teach business in schools and colleges.

They were letting a limiting belief stop them from taking action on their goal.

With that barrier busted, they could optimize toward that goal more effectively.

In conclusion, dealing with emotional barriers is an important part of scaling a business.

More important than trying to optimize the sh*t out of everything to create results.

By being aware of your emotional barriers and creating strategies to manage them, you can open yourself up to new opportunities and build a more successful business.

What are the emotional barriers stopping you?

  • Episode 37: The only question you need to use in 2023

Welcome back to the Self-Performance-Strategies (S-P-S) Podcast

For the 1st episode of 2023, let’s talk about asking yourself questions.

    As Voltaire said:

“Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers.”

    Do you ask yourself questions?

Do you ask yourself the right questions?

What if there was only one question you needed to know to succeed in your business and life?

Well, there is one question, and it rules all others.

The world of finance inspires this question.

It’s a question that gets you to the bottom line.

What is the question you ask?

    Well, here it is:

“Knowing what I know now, would I…?”

Why is this a powerful question?

First, it allows you to reflect on your past decisions and actions from a new perspective.

By considering what you know now, you will gain insight into what you might have done differently and use that knowledge to make better choices in the future.

This helps you avoid repeating mistakes and make more informed decisions aligned with your values and goals.

Second, this question will help you identify areas where you are holding yourself back.

By considering what you would do differently with the knowledge and experience you have now.

You may realize that you have been limiting yourself in some way.

This helps you overcome those limitations and pursue your goals more effectively.

Third, it helps you stay focused on what is most important to you.

Helping you make the most of your time and achieve your goals more efficiently.

Finally, this question helps you cultivate a growth mindset and a sense of continuous improvement.

You acknowledge that you are learning and growing by asking yourself what you would do differently.

This will help you develop the resilience and determination needed to succeed in business and life.

Cool, Stephen, but how do you use and apply a question like that?

You apply it to your business and life in many areas:

    - Your projects

    - Your interests

    - Your relationships

Ask yourself, “knowing what I know now, would I…”

    - Continue with a specific project?

    - Keep investing in a relationship?

    - Go deeper with a hobby or skill?

This question gets you to the bottom line of what you want to focus on in 2023.

For example, I asked this question about which platforms I wanted to focus on to grow my business.

I quickly dropped Instagram and TikTok.

Because I am focused on improving my digital writing and, knowing what I know now, those platforms distract me from improving that skill.

This question helps me remove dumb sh*t stopping me from my core goals.

In my opinion, this is the best question to use if you want to focus on less and achieve more.

It forces you to be honest with yourself.

    What relationships are draining you?

What pointless activities are you doing?

What low-ROI projects do you need to drop?

When you ask yourself this question, you will decide yes or no quickly and build plans from there.

You can strategically walk away from that relationship/activity or dive deeper into it.

How do you react to the answers you get?

Once I get the answers to this question, I put my current projects, activities, or relationships into 3 buckets:

    1) Go Deeper

    2) Continue as is

    3) Stop and walk away

I review these buckets quarterly, similar to using the 80/20 philosophy: What areas provide the most results and rewards?

If you can figure out and organize all your activities and relationships into those 3 buckets, you will end up focusing on the high-value and high-$$$ areas of your life.

Ask yourself knowing what I know now, would I...? and see the results.

"Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood. All is riddle, and the key to a riddle is another riddle."

    - Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have spent the last two weeks dealing with Covid; it has hit me hard.

Hopefully, next week I will be back to normal.

As we are in December, I have started reviewing my year and pulled out the top 22 lessons from my journal.

These ideas and lessons have come up often in my journals over the last 12 months.

    Let's dive in:

    1) Your Progress speeds up when you do less of the dumb sh*t slowing you down mentally, emotionally, and physically.

This lesson frames my entire year; it is much easier to progress in life and business by simply avoiding the negative habits slowing you down.

Doing less dumb sh*t has also impacted my 1-to-1 coaching clients, with all of them finding this framing effective for improving results.

    2) With momentum, you constantly expand into more freedom of time, money, relationships, and purpose.

You already have a level of all four of those freedoms; often, you forget how good you have it in the chase to achieve more.

When you focus on momentum, you naturally expand in all areas of life.

    3) 80% of what you are doing today is holding you back from your next leap forward.

Harsh truth? Yes, but one you have to wrap your head around.

The majority of your actions each day, mentally, emotionally, and physically are holding you back.

    4) Your level of success is based on how high your internal deserve levels are.

If you don't think you deserve it, you won't create it, no matter how hard you try.

If you feel like you deserve it, it will come to you if you put the effort in.

    5) All progress starts by telling the truth about your current situation.

Being honest with yourself is essential.

This honesty might come from data from past results or good old journaling and getting super clear on what you want and where you are.

    6) Your next quantitative leap forward comes from raising the quality of your daily standards mentally, emotionally, and physically.

The quality of your daily habits will predict the speed of achieving and the size of your next quantitive win.

Take a look at your daily schedule, and you can start predicting your future.

    7) You only wish for success if you don't have a clear why or vision.

Simple, I never met or worked with anyone who has had tremendous success without having these two areas dialled in.

This year has taught me I need to be revisiting and reviewing my whys and vision regularly.

    8) Knowing your high-value and high-$$$ activities means you don't need productivity hacks to complete your work.

Why do you need hacks if you know what to work on and what makes you money?

When you put your important activities 1st, life works better.

    9) Productivity hacks are for the work and activities you don't love doing; maybe it's time to drop or delegate those tasks.

Don't like doing certain types of work? Hire help or stop doing them.

80% of the work you do shouldn't be a struggle for you to do.

    10) Productivity is about getting work done efficiently. Performance is about achieving high-level results, don't mix the two up.

Without creating results, optimizing your productivity is a waste of time.

    11) 10X has little to do with increasing the quantity of your results and is much more about improving the quality of your outputs.

You make huge leaps forward because you improve your standards.

You make huge leaps forward because you do less dumb sh*t.

This means less output but at a higher quality.

    12) A full calendar is a fool's calendar.

You need slack and room to think, relax, and recharge.

    13) Raising your floor is often more important than hitting new highs.

How far you fall on your bad days matters.

If your worst days look like your old good days. You know you are making progress.

    14) Breakdowns lead to breakthroughs; hitting a wall is good for you if you take the lessons on board.

When you hit a barrier, look at it as an opportunity. The barrier is there for a reason. You have something to learn. Lean into it.

    15) High hope people are more likely to overcome barriers in their lives and succeed.

Hope is fuel. If you can see the benefit of overcoming your obstacles, you will find the motivation to keep going. High hope gives everything positive framing.

    16) Those who ignore the compound effect and switch directions every 6 months or less will struggle to create the success they want.

Everything takes longer than you think it will. If you don't commit, you won't win. When you start, expect results to come in a year or more.

    17) 99% of the changes you need to make require adapting your behaviour and emotions.

But 99% of the time, you will attempt to make that change with hacks, shortcuts, and half-baked strategies before realizing it was an internal shift that was needed.

    18) Having regular conversations with a future version of yourself who has completed all your goals is an essential journal exercise.

If you are not journaling like this weekly or at least a few times a month, you're disadvantaged to those who do.

Clarity comes from processing your own thoughts.

    19) Be - Do - Have

You already have all you need to succeed within you; act from a place of knowing success is inevitable.

Ask yourself regularly: If I was who I wanted to be, how would I react to this situation?

    20) Daily walks are a life-changing habit.

All areas of life improve when you take the time to go for walks.

If there is one habit you should do, it's this one.

    21) Never chase anything, expecting it to fill an emotional hole or change your life because it won't.

Hitting targets or goals doesn't change your life; the habits and standards you build to get you to those goals do.

It is the journey, not the destination, that is the reward.

    22) You have to let go to grow.

Letting go isn't just about releasing trapped negative emotions or expectations for results.

The key to letting go is to let go of everything.

The good, the bad, the ugly, and the wonderful.

Let it all go, and you will grow.

As I dive deeper into my 2022 review, I am sure I will pull out more lessons.

I love this time of year and getting a head start on the new year in December.

When January 1st comes around, you are already primed and ready to rock n roll.

Looking forward to a huge 2023 for you.
