I'm recording this episode on the Cunard Queen Mary II cruise ship, where I'm currently on tour with the Brisbane Immersive Ensemble, doing Cluedo, The Interactive Game.
In today's episode of "Self Produced," I discuss the mindset of artists towards business and the need to shift our perspective. I share my belief on how we can use the same way other industries approach 'business' to develop a sustainable base for our artistic income.
A conversation that turns into a masterclass with Mae de la Rue
Mae De La Rue is a seasoned burlesque performer who has been captivating audiences for 12 years. By day, she works in social media, but by night, she takes the stage, dazzling crowds with her performances in Sydney, Illawarra, and across Australia and New Zealand. Mae is also passionate about teaching burlesque and runs The Muse School of Burlesque in both Illawarra and the Sutherland Shire. Additionally, she organizes Hot and Fresh Burlesque, a must-see event in Port Kembla, and the DIY Burlesque Koala competition, where performers create innovative acts on a $100 budget. Mae is dedicated to bringing the glitz and glam of burlesque to audiences.
In this episode we pick up on the Marketing Theatre discussions between myself and Sherryl-lee Secomb. Discussing the ins and out of doing marketing better for theatre shows.
Marketing theatre was a series of discussions between Paul Adams and Sherryl-lee Secomb on the Business of Art YouTube channel.. They still exist on the newly branded Self Produced YouTube channel.
Hey there! Welcome to Self Produced. Like many creatives, I've grappled with the idea that focusing on the business side of art equates to "selling out."
In this podcast, I'll be sharing my personal journey of transitioning from creating art that led to financial loss to prioritizing the building of a sustainable business from my creative work.
Drawing from my experience in business management and leadership, and conversations with other artists, I'll delve into the importance of understanding the foundational structures required to scale a business from the ground up.
Throughout this podcast, I aim to share my wins, losses, and research, providing insights for fellow artists looking to establish sustainable income streams. Stay tuned as I also offer a behind-the-scenes look at my work my business Small Crown Productions, my work with a local arts organisation, looking at both for profit and not-for-profit entities.
Join me on this journey of self-production and business-minded artistry.
