    Psalm 44

    For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil.
    1 We have heard it with our ears, O God;
    our ancestors have told us
    what you did in their days,
    in days long ago.
    2 With your hand you drove out the nations
    and planted our ancestors;
    you crushed the peoples
    and made our ancestors flourish.
    3 It was not by their sword that they won the land,
    nor did their arm bring them victory;
    it was your right hand, your arm,
    and the light of your face, for you loved them.
    4 You are my King and my God,
    who decrees[c] victories for Jacob.
    5 Through you we push back our enemies;
    through your name we trample our foes.
    6 I put no trust in my bow,
    my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies,
    you put our adversaries to shame.
    8 In God we make our boast all day long,
    and we will praise your name forever.[d]
    9 But now you have rejected and humbled us;
    you no longer go out with our armies.
    10 You made us retreat before the enemy,
    and our adversaries have plundered us.
    11 You gave us up to be devoured like sheep
    and have scattered us among the nations.
    12 You sold your people for a pittance,
    gaining nothing from their sale.
    13 You have made us a reproach to our neighbors,
    the scorn and derision of those around us.
    14 You have made us a byword among the nations;
    the peoples shake their heads at us.
    15 I live in disgrace all day long,
    and my face is covered with shame
    16 at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me,
    because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.
    17 All this came upon us,
    though we had not forgotten you;
    we had not been false to your covenant.
    18 Our hearts had not turned back;
    our feet had not strayed from your path.
    19 But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals;
    you covered us over with deep darkness.
    20 If we had forgotten the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
    21 would not God have discovered it,
    since he knows the secrets of the heart?
    22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
    we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
    23 Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep?
    Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.
    24 Why do you hide your face
    and forget our misery and oppression?
    25 We are brought down to the dust;
    our bodies cling to the ground.
    26 Rise up and help us;
    rescue us because of your unfailing love.

    Psalm 88 is a poignant and somber psalm that delves into themes of deep despair, suffering, and a feeling of abandonment by God. It is often considered one of the most lamenting psalms in the Book of Psalms. The author is attributed to Heman the Ezrahite, a wise man from the time of King Solomon, and the psalm is set to the tune of "Mahalath Leannoth," which suggests a melody suited for lamentation.Structure and Content
    1. Verses 1-2: Opening Cry for Help
      • The psalmist begins with an urgent cry to the "LORD, God of my salvation," indicating his faith in God despite his distress. He pleads for God to hear his prayers and listen to his cry for help, highlighting the intensity of his suffering.
    2. Verses 3-5: Expression of Suffering and Nearness to Death
      • The psalmist describes his soul as being full of troubles and his life nearing the grave. He feels close to death, likening himself to those who have gone down to the pit, cut off from the living. The imagery used suggests a deep sense of hopelessness and abandonment, as if he is already among the dead, without strength or hope.
    3. Verses 6-9: Feeling of Being Forsaken by God
      • He accuses God of putting him in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths, surrounded by God’s wrath. This section reflects a profound sense of alienation from God, feeling like God’s anger has overwhelmed him. The psalmist laments that God has distanced friends and loved ones from him, leaving him isolated and shunned.
    4. Verses 10-12: Questions About the Afterlife
      • The psalmist poses rhetorical questions about the dead praising God, showcasing his fear that in death, he will be unable to worship or acknowledge God’s deeds. This reflects a common theme in the Hebrew Bible, where the afterlife is seen as a place of silence, and thus the psalmist's desperation to be saved while still alive.
    5. Verses 13-18: Continued Plea and Sense of Abandonment
      • Despite his feelings of abandonment, the psalmist continues to cry out to God, expressing that his prayers go unanswered. He describes the darkness and terrors he feels, suggesting a state of overwhelming fear and confusion. The psalm ends on a bleak note, with the psalmist lamenting that darkness is his closest companion, implying a feeling of being engulfed by despair and isolation.
    Themes and Reflections
    • The Depth of Despair: Psalm 88 stands out in the Psalter for its unrelieved tone of sorrow and despair. Unlike many other psalms, it does not end with an expression of hope or a turn towards praise. The psalmist feels utterly forsaken, both by God and by others, which emphasizes the depth of his anguish.
    • Questioning and Lament: The psalmist’s questions about the afterlife and the dead praising God reflect a deep theological and existential struggle. These questions underscore the psalmist’s desperation and confusion about God's justice and mercy, particularly in times of intense suffering.
    • Faith Amid Despair: Despite the overwhelming sense of abandonment, the psalmist addresses God as the "God of my salvation," indicating an underlying faith. This suggests that even in the darkest moments, the psalmist still turns to God, seeking understanding and deliverance.
    • Human Frailty and Divine Silence: The psalm highlights the fragility of...
