It’s human nature to want to be liked, accepted and loved. As cynical as you can act or as much as you say you don’t need those things, you do. We are social creatures, and it’s built into our D.N.A. In the past, as addicts/alcoholics, we would be cast out and shunned. Known as the “town drunk,” we would be left to our own demise. Sometimes it seems that we haven’t come that far from those days. Take a trip around “The Nickle” (Skidrow) in L.A., and you will see how we treat our low-end alcoholics/addicts. When we are separated from a fundamental human need, isolated, cut off, and shunned, it can only make our disease and circumstances seem much worse.
