In the final days of our active addiction/alcoholism, we are completely at a loss to pull ourselves out of the “pit of despair” in which we have found ourselves. At times in our past, maybe we were successful in our efforts to “pull ourselves up by our bootstraps,” but not in the end. It was terrifying to consider that, no matter how hard we tried, we were losing the battle against addiction. Some of us reached out for help, and there were people there to help pull us out. Others felt like they had nobody left and resigned themselves to dying of overdose or liver failure. It can be downright tragic and full of trauma. Our lives were full of traumatic events, not just the final days. Our daily lives were lived in chaos and confusion. Why do you think we talk about it in meetings so fucking much? There is a traumatic component to surviving the most bewildering affliction most people will ever know.
