Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas. A prequel to the 1994 hit The Flintstones, this movie shows how Fred (Mark Addy) and Barney (Stephen Baldwin) met Wilma (Kristen Johnson) and Betty (Jane Krakowski). In the middle of all this, they have to deal with The Great Gazoo (Alan Cumming) monitoring human mating habit.

Focusing more on class warfare than the original, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas still has a way too complicated plot for this kind of film, great set design, and a sloppy sense of pacing. The cameos are less fresh this time around, and the locale of Rock Vegas is only saved for the end of the picture. Despite everyone trying their hardest, this sequel is a far cry from the mediocre original.

Mat has started watching Season 4 of the BBC series Sherlock and enjoyed its darker tone and attempts to shore up the character of Watson (Martin Campbell) at the expense of Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch). Thrasher caught an old episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 focusing on the movie Kitten With a Whip.

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss The Flintstones. A live-action adaptation of the 1960s cartoon, The Flintstones was in the works for almost a decade. Fred Flinstons (John Goodman) gives all his savings to help his friend Barney (Rick Moranis) adopt a child. To pay him back, Barney flips his test results with Fred at work. Fred becomes an executive and an asshole. Will he succumb to Sharon Stone (Halle Berry) and Cliff Vandercave's (Kyle MachLachlan) wiles?  

The Flintstones wavers uneasily in its tone. Opening with a recreation of the show's theme song? Great. Having a plot focusing on infedility and embezzelement? Not so great. It has too complicated a plot even at its best of times, but it's a triumph of set design with performances that ape, but don't mimic, the classic cartoon characters.

Mat enjoys the documentary Floyd Norman: An Animated Life about the long career of an animator who started work with Disney on Sleeping Beauty, ended up forming a production company responsible for the title sequence of Soul Train, and ended up helping with story on Toy Story 2. 

Thrasher caught up with the fun Supernatural crossover episode of Scooby Doo and the serviceable Scooby Doo! Wrestlemania Mystery.

The fifth in the series and the second animated entry, this movie ties in more to the original than any other sequel in the series. After being assigned to a backwater satellite on Mars, Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) is stuck training a bunch of novice troops. After learning of a massive bug uprising, Johnny brings his crew to Mars to investigate. Meanwhile, vile things are afoot with Sky Marshall Amy Snapp's (Emily Neves) publicity campaign surrounding the Q-Bomb. 

Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars delivers a story featuring more satire, more action, and more relevance to the original film. Casper Van Dien and Dina Meyer returning to voice Johnny Rico and Dizzy Flores bring depth to their performances. A live-action remake of the original Starship Troopers is in the works. One hopes it will be less bland than the Total Recall remake. 

Mat caught Solo: A Star Wars Story in theaters and felt it was the most inconsequential Star Wars movie to date. He also appreciated how the Netflix documentary series The Toys That Made Us focuses on the business end of classic toys rather than the collectors themselves.

Thrasher enjoyed the trailer for The Happytime Murders, a live-action R-rated puppet film from director Brian Henson. He also liked the tight storytelling of They Were Eleven, a science-fiction anime feature from the 1980s.

Led by his oldest brother Judah (Mark Hamill), Joseph (Ben Affleck) is sold into slavery as a prank. After cleaning floors, suffering in a pit, and explaining dreams, Joseph rises to prominence. Can he forgive his brothers when they need his help the most?

Although it looks similar to The Prince of Egypt, Joseph: King of Dreams is a much cheaper affair. Neither the music or the story is as captivating, although there are moments of wonder in the dream sequences. A more intimate story by its nature, this movie tries its best and ends up waffling around. Things get moving once Joseph is sold off as a slave in Egypt. 

Mat and Thrasher feel Deadpool 2 was a very good sequel emboldened by its more complicated story, greater variety of characters, and light tone. 

Mat enjoys 78/52 Hitchcock's Shower Scene, an in-depth scholarly documentary on the infamous shower scene from Psycho. He also has enjoyed the antics of master impressionist Sour Shoes on The Howard Stern Show.

Thrasher did not like revisiting Antz, finding it so boring he had to shut it off. He continues his voyage into the work of puppeteer Paul Fusco with the TV special A Far Out 4th; depsite some neat puppets, it too was a letdown.

After Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen formed DreamWorks Pictures, they had their sights set on developing hit live-action and animated films. Their second animated film after the CG Woody Allen comedy Antz, Prince of Egypt is a 2D animated feature retelling the first part of the story of Moses from the Book of Exodus in the Bible. After accidentally murdering a man, Moses (Val Kilmer) reunites with his blood relatives and returns to the Pharoah (Ralph Fiennes) with a plea to let his people go. Many plagues are unleashed until he gets his way. 

Featuring dramatic musical numbers from Stephen Schwartz of Godspell fame, The Prince of Egypt shows an unusual level of maturity for an American animated feature. At times dark, violent, and oppressive, The Prince of Egypt is a great retelling of a classic story revered in religions around the world. The Prince of Egypt is the rare movie that is better than you remembered. 

Thrasher enjoys the exploding fungus sci-fi epic Contimation. He also likes the sass of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In.

Mat caught up with two recent comedies, one decent (Why Me?), the other not (The House).

Why Me? has a familiar tale of the girl that goes to college and gets engaged to a tech billionaire, but will his uncouth ways clash with her family. James Franco is great in the lead, and there's even a fun cameo from a legacy rock band at the end. 

The House is a flat comedy about an illegal gambling operation in the suburbs. It's the kind of concept that can barely fill a sketch, let alone a movie. Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler really give it their all to little avail.

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, William Thrasher, and special guest Ryan Hoss (Batman on Film, Super Mario Bros. The Movie Archive) discuss Son of The Mask. Although he signed a 2-picture deal with New Line Cinema for The Mask, Jim Carrey decided to not move forward with The Mask 2. A sequel without Carrey wiggled its way into theaters in 2005 with MTV and Scream star Jamie Kennedy in the lead. Tim Avery (Jamie Kennedy) is fighting with his wife (Traylor Howard) over whether or not to have a baby. Tim finds the mask, and knocks up his wife while wearing it. This makes his newborn son the titular Son of the Mask. Meanwhile, Loki (Alan Cumming) is commanded by Odin (Bob Hoskins) to retrieve the Mask from Earth.

This is a sequel that misses the point of what made the original so great. It's tough to compete or even match the manic levels of energy of an early 1990s Jim Carrey, but the tone is so dumbed down and the plot so complicated that what results is an unfunny mess. There are moments of inspired surrealism, but the poor CGI, Kennedy's sad-sack performance, and literal cartoon gags makes this one for the truly desparate or small children. 

Mat though parts of Snatched with Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer were inspired. It takes time to set up its zany story, and Hawn and Schumer have a nice chemistry. Not hilarious, but it's fine to watch if it happens to pop up on your streaming service of choice.

Thrasher caught Pacific Rim Uprising in theaters and thought it looked cheaper and lacked the interesting monster designs of the original. 

Ryan enjoyed the recent Blu-ray release of Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero. As a nice touch, the disc has all the Mr. Freeze episodes from Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond as an extra.
