Sequential Fiction – Episode 29

It was a HUGE week in comics and pop culture. There is a ton of Movie and TV news including the debut of Preacher on AMC, the Flash season finale.  The comics world wasn’t quiet either with Comixology Unlimited, the DC Rebirth launch…and a brand new logo for DC Comics.

Brian’s Pick of the week: DC Universe Rebirth #1

Ting Comics and Arts Festival ended May 21st. Merle “Ting” Tingley was an editorial cartoonist at the London Free Press from 1948 – 1986. He was famous for his little “Luke Worm” character. Diana Tamblyn put this festival together to celebrate the artists and writers from London and the surrounding area. The talent that has come out of this area is pretty cool and includes: Jeff Lemiere, Marc Bell, Scott Chantler, Tim Levins, Seth, J. Bone, David Collier, and of course Bryan Lee O’Malley.

Brian had the opportunity to interview Bryan Lee O’Malley at the Arts Project last week. Unfortunately the interview wasn’t recorded, but here’s some highlights.

This week’s episode we talk about Darwyn Cooke who passed away on May 14th, as well as an overview of TCAF, and much more on Sequential Fiction.

The Toronto Comics Arts Festival took place the weekend of May 14th.  I was there on Sunday, and it was packed.  This is a show I’ve always wanted to go to, but have never been able to because it usually falls on Mother’s Day Weekend.  It’s headquartered in the Reference Library at Davenport and Yonge street, and had some satellite locations including the Info-Tech Masonic Temple.

Darwyn Cooke passed away on May 14th after a short, and aggressive battle with cancer.

Darwyn was born in Toronto in 1962, he got his start in comics in 1985 when he was published in New Comics Showcase after traveling to New York to show off his work. His first story was a crime story. His first story got picked up, but in the 80’s it was hard to get published by a New York publisher unless you lived in New York. He spent two years trying to break in, and instead started working in Canada as an Art Director and a Graphic Designer.

Brian and Liam share their thoughts on Deadpool which is now available on home video.  At a worldwide gross of $768million, Deadpool is the highest grossing X-Men movie ever, the highest grossing R Rated movie ever, and was made for $58million.

Auroraman – Episode 24

We’re back! After a brief hiatus, Sequential Fiction returns with a brand new interview.

Jeff Burton is the writer of Auroraman, he and Brian spoke about the character, his artist Justin Shauf, and their brand new Kickstarter.
