After last week's mass shooting in Las Vegas we needed to talk about the subject of anxiety. The news and our instant access to it can make us all jittery, even obsessed with what might go wrong. Are there disasters waiting around the corner? And what about my normal worries? Is there a way to deal with this that's real and helpful? God does have a very potent answer.

In our third of three sermons on covenant, we look at the covenant we have with one another as members of Christ's body. God loves us and sees us as individuals, but He has also created us to function as members of a committed community. We can never be truly spiritually mature in isolation!

This second message in a series called "Promises, Promises" is also about covenant, but with a different twist. We'll compare covenant, contract and promises and find that each has its place in our lives now. We'll also find out what David and Jonathan did in regard to covenant and how what they did means a great deal to us.

This is part one of a three part series on the subject of covenant. That probably sounds too theological or boring or just unfamiliar, but covenant, or the lack therof, is the primary reason for mistrust, brokenness and trouble in our world. Find out what covenant means, how it's supposed to look and how to restore or make one and find new security and trust.

- Not perfection, but progression

- Confidence - Peter had confidence, if Jesdus walked on water, so could I. "Jesus, call me and I'll come to you." (Matthew 14:23 - 28)

- "It's about whose you are, not who you are."

- Take one step in confident.

- Set aside perfection and go ahead. "Show us what to do."

- "Give God room to breathe."

- Have confidence in who Christ is.

- Step out to see progress

- Obedience (Matt. 14:29:) Take first step and be obedient to what God says (calls us to.)

- Sometimes we get so caught up with perfection we don't do anything ("What ifs...") What's stopping you?

- Saviour not expecting perfection.

Dependence (Matt. 14:30 - 31:)

- We all make mistakes (like Peter)

- Depend on God

- If you don't make mistakes, you're not challenging yourself. Take risks, have obedience.

At some time or another, life is going to be hard for you and for me. In the Gospel of John 16, Jesus speaks to his disciples, warning them of his death. He tells them, "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” What was he doing there? He wanted to prepare them, telling them in advance what would happen, so that they could have a proper response and have peace.

We all have our perspectives about our pasts--good or bad. But few of us have God's perspectives on our futures. Find out what He says about our futures, what we're promised, and what God is asking of us!
