  • They Think It Strange (Part 1)
In these verses, Peter described how the life of a Christian is to be different from the world. However, we did not always behave in this way. Every Christian has sins in their past, yet we gave them up. Those around us notice the difference and are surprised by our behavior – “they think it strange” (KJV). Let us consider some of the ways that we ought to stand out from the world. What do people notice about us that they are “surprised” about?

  • Who Was Moses?
One of the major characters in the Bible is Moses. He was the one who led the people of Israel out of Egyptian bondage. He was the one who parted the Red Sea. He was the one who received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. There are many lessons we can learn from Moses. We’ll highlight a few characteristics in this lesson.

  • Unacceptable Gifts for God
These words from God in our text might sound shocking to many people today. Why would God not accept worship that was being offered to Him? In this case, it was because of their sin. Yet there are other passages that describe other kinds of unacceptable gifts to God. In this lesson, we’re going to consider some unacceptable gifts we may offer to God. We do not want to offer something that He would “hate” or “reject.”

  • Renewed Day by Day
Many see the start of a new year as a time of renewal. The idea is good; however, as with all things, it is important that we think about it Biblically. There are a few passages in the New Testament that talk about being renewed. Let us consider what these passages say about it.

  • Hope for the Future
Throughout the book of Proverbs, a contrast is made between wisdom and foolishness. Those who follow the wisdom from above and live according to it will be righteous. Those who reject this wisdom will engage in wickedness. However, even though the wicked reject godly wisdom, they often prosper in life – and often at the expense of the righteous. In our text, Solomon explained that the righteous who follow wisdom have hope for the future. Rather than getting discouraged about their current situation (or that of the wicked), there were certain things they were told to do and not do.

  • Three Ways to Be Poor
Our society places a lot of emphasis on those who are poor – some sincerely, some with ulterior motives. God’s people are to be concerned about the poor (Galatians 2:10; Proverbs 29:7). However, despite the concern we should have, there will always be people who are poor (John 12:8). Yet when the Bible talks about people who are poor, it is not only referring to material things. Just as Jesus said that one class will always be with us, the others will always exist as well. In this lesson, we are going to look at what the Bible says about the three ways to be poor.

  • Seek the Welfare of the City
In this passage, Jeremiah sent a letter to the exiles living in captivity. The letter contained instructions about how they were to conduct themselves while in exile and explained what they could hope for in the future. Today, we live as exiles in the world. The basic points in Jeremiah’s letter are helpful for us as well.

  • Raising Lazarus from the Dead
Throughout Jesus’ earthly ministry, He performed various miracles to demonstrate His divine power. The miracle we are discussing here was when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. As we study this miracle, as with every Bible passage, it is important to understand the context. This miracle teaches us certain things about Jesus and provides an important lesson for us.

  • The All-Knowing, All-Powerful God
This psalm is about God – His omniscience and His omnipotence. Omniscience means He is all-knowing. There is nothing hidden from Him (which is related to the idea of “omnipresence”). Omnipotence means He is all-powerful. There is nothing that He cannot do. Let us consider what this psalm has to teach us about God.

  • Following Paul’s Example (Part 2)
In our text, Paul wrote to Timothy about how the young evangelist had followed the apostle’s example in various ways. Examples are important. Paul knew that he needed to set an example to others (cf. 1 Corinthians 11:1). What about us? Are we setting the example that we need to set before others? Timothy was to follow Paul’s example, yet he was also to be an example to others (cf. 1 Timothy 4:12). The same is true for us. We need to set the same example for others that Paul set for Timothy (and for us).
