  • United in Ungodliness
When the people decided to work together to build the Tower of Babel, they were united. However, what they decided to do was not God’s will; so He scattered them. Just because people are united does not mean that the action/result is good. There are a few examples in the book of Genesis that illustrate this.

  • God Cannot Lie
In our text, the Hebrew writer made the point that “it is impossible for God to lie.” Paul made the same point in his letter to Titus: “...God, who cannot lie...” (Titus 1:2). The Hebrew writer used this point to explain our source of encouragement and reason for hope. Why is it “impossible for God to lie” and what does that mean for us?

  • What the Bible Teaches about Suicide
Suicide is the act in which one intentionally kills himself – not an accident, not sacrificing one’s life, not ending treatment for a terminal illness. Sadly, this is a growing problem in the U.S. There is not a specific passage in the Bible that explicitly states that suicide is either wrong or justifiable. We need to consider principles that relate to this issue. It is a sensitive topic, but we need to understand what the Bible says that relates to this.

  • Practicing the Golden Rule
Most people, religious or not, recognize the “golden rule” – do unto others as you would have them do unto you. This is based upon Jesus’ statement in our text. We know the statement, but how do we put it into practice?

  • Turning Blessings into Curses (Part 2)
In the Bible, honey is often used to symbolize God’s great blessings for man (cf. Exodus 3:8). Yet in our text, the wise man pointed out that this same blessing can be turned into something with negative effects. It is possible to take the good things God blesses us with and turn them into bad things. This can be done by misuse, abuse, excess, etc. In this lesson, we will consider a few examples of how this can be done.

  • The Suffering Servant
This chapter is a prophecy about Jesus – in particular, it is about His suffering on the cross. This is an important chapter because of the prophecy showing that God knew what would happen. It is also important in explaining why and how Jesus made His sacrifice.

  • A City Set on a Hill
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus described His disciples as “a city set on a hill.” Cities were often built on hills and raised areas because there were benefits to doing this. Jesus’ disciples are like this – there are benefits of being like the city on a hill, but there are also challenges.

  • A Model of Personal Evangelism
In this chapter, Jesus spoke with a woman at a well in Samaria. As a result of this conversation, she came know that He was the Messiah (v. 25-26), she told others about Jesus (v. 28-29), and many believed in Him (v. 41-42). We often wonder how to go about doing “personal evangelism.” This chapter provides a model. Jesus’ interaction with this woman gives us insight as to how we might go about teaching the lost today.

  • Jeremiah and the Parable of the Sower
One of the more well-known parables of Jesus is the parable of the sower. It is a simple parable – its basic point can be explained quickly, yet it teaches an important lesson. It is also one we can build upon to draw out other points. In this lesson, we are going to consider this parable and build upon it with lessons learned from Jeremiah.
