Our Youth Pastor, Gillian MacKenzie, looks at various passages in Scripture, highlighting the important quality of being an encourager. In a wider culture where humiliating people is often seen as a form of entertainment, God calls us to do something completely counter-cultural: become people who encourage others by means of our thought-life, speech and action.

It is difficult to trust Christ in our adversity. Vijay looks at the account of Peter (and Jesus) Walking on Water found in Matthew 14:22-33. He gleans insights from the passage and suggests that adversity, among other things, offers the disciple the opportunity to change their way of looking at life and to encounter Jesus for who he truly is.

This morning Vijay observes how often we fail to see how central the principle of sacrifice really is for discipleship. The first worship service ever to take place in the Tabernacle, recorded in Leviticus 9, was a series of sacrifices. A life lived in worship of God is a life that is completely placed on the altar. We give ourselves to God because he deserves our all. But, in a strange twist, it is we who are enriched by our offering, not God. We are the ones blessed and transformed by the fire of God's glory.

Sometimes we are very slow to learn important lessons. James looks at a psalm in which the main point is emphasised no less than 13 times! It's Psalm 150 and the main point is 'Praise the LORD'.
