James 2:19-26

James illustrates his previously stated principle regarding faith and works through one example of useless faith (as illustrated through demons) and two examples of authentic faith (as illustrated through Abraham and Rahab). In giving these examples, James asserts two important principles for us to remember: 1) Salvation is by faith alone, and 2) Salvation is by a faith that is not alone (2:26).

James 2:14-18

James teaches us that a Faith lacking the power to change a person and produce Works (in accordance with that faith) is powerless and unable to save. On the other hand, a true and saving faith changes us and produces good works, and in the context of James 2, a saving faith changes the way we respond to people in need.

James 2:8-13

James continues to discuss the topic of Favoritism by reminding us of God’s Royal Command to “love your neighbor as yourself.” When we truly love others as God has loved us, we are demonstrating the fact that we have received mercy; and James tells us that mercy triumphs over judgment!

James 2:1-7

James gives us several principles to consider in light of our tendency to show favoritism to the rich and powerful: 1) Distinctions based on wealth are evil, 2) Jesus’ grace makes us all equals, 3) Keep your eyes on the King.

To better equip us to have victory over our everyday temptations, James teaches us regarding the: Source of Temptation; the Course of Temptation; and how to Break The Cycle.
