Throughout human history there has always been a tendency for people to find significance and fulfillment through their job and the fruits of their labor. Solomon, on the other hand, had come to a place where he actually hated his work for a variety of reasons. In response to all of this, Solomon gives the first truly positive insight in the book as he encourages us to focus on enjoying whatever God gives to us, including our "toil" (not just the fruit of our labor, but the labor itself). God has given us all good work to do.

Ecclesiastes 2:1-11

In this passage Solomon shares his experiments in Self-Centered Hedonism and the results. In contrast, the Bible instructs us to seek our joy and satisfaction in God Himself. While God gives us gifts to enjoy, they cannot satisfy the deepest longing of our soul, only God can do that.
