Jesus could have looked away from Mary and Martha's pain over the death of their brother. He could have pretended not to see it or he could have downplayed it, saying, “I’m here to raise Lazarus, so you can stop crying now, because I’m going to fix this.” Instead, Jesus looks them in the eye. He enters into their pain and shares it with them. The Man of Sorrows enters into their sorrow and walks through the valley of the shadow of death with them. Sermon from The Table.
