At the resurrection, Jesus begins his new estate of exaltation. In John 20:1–18, we see that Jesus rises from the dead to reconcile us to God.

In John 19:28–42, Jesus finishes his work of suffering and humiliation, moving toward his exaltation at the resurrection. At his death, Jesus finishes his work in order to become the firstfruits of a new creation.

In John 19:16b–27, Jesus loses more than his life. To gain his heavenly kingdom, Jesus loses his worldly purity, worldly possessions, and worldly parent.

In John 19:1–16a, Jesus demonstrates that his royal power is not of this world—not in personal appearance, political clout, or public opinion.

We take the cross for granted, but how is the cross compatible with a king? Jesus can take the curse of the world because his kingship is not of the world.

At last in John 18:1–27, Jesus begins his actual approach toward the cross. Through these trials, Jesus most fully reveals his true identity at the cross.

In John 17:20–26, Jesus intercedes for the unity of his church in the gospel. Not a unity that is merely formal and outward, but for true unity in his word.

In John 17:6–19, as Jesus prepares to leave the world, he testifies to his work for his disciples. Then, Jesus intercedes for the sanctity of his people.

Before Jesus goes to the cross, he prays in John 17 that his death will not be in vain. Here, Jesus intercedes for the full acceptance of his sacrifice.
