In John 16:16–33, Jesus promises to bring forth joy out of the sorrow of the cross. Neither Jesus' deepest sorrows nor our deepest sorrows will be in vain!

In John 16:4b–15, Jesus teaches that the Holy Spirit equips believers by exposing the bankruptcy of the world and by enriching us from Christ's treasury.

Because we will face hatred from the same enemies in the world who opposed Jesus, Jesus sends his Spirit to keep us from falling away.

After Jesus' departure, he continues his mission through his people and his Spirit. Specifically, Jesus will continue to bear fruit through his people.

In John 14:15–31, Jesus explains how he will continue to complete his mission after his earthly ministry of his life, death, resurrection, and ascension.

Jesus reconciles us to the Father, he reveals the Father to us, and he reigns on behalf of the Father. John 14:1–14 declares: Jesus manifests the Father.

Jesus’ self-sacrificial love glorified him at the cross. This is Jesus’ mission and glory, for Jesus glorifies himself through self-sacrificial love.

The suffering servanthood of Jesus connects to our own suffering in this way: Jesus takes the form of a servant to save and to send.
