It's Pentecost! Today, we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and the formation of the Church. In this sermon, Pastor Daniel Flucke explores both Jesus' promise of the Holy Spirit to be an Advocate for the disciples after he is no longer physically with them, and the fulfillment of that promise in Acts 2. 

Each year we celebrate Pentecost as the birthday of the Church because nearly 2,000 years later, the Holy Spirit is still at work among us, enabling us to be Jesus' hands and feet in the world. The Holy Spirit comes to the apostles, reinvigorating them after Jesus' ascension and sending them out into the world. May we listen to the Holy Spirit at work in, on, and through us this week as we seek to faithfully follow Jesus together!

On this final Sunday of the Easter season, we will hear the story of Jesus' ascension. While this is a lesser-known holiday ("holy day"), it is an essential part of the story of Jesus' earthly ministry, and there are some significant implications for our faith and life today. Although Jesus ascends into heaven, God's work in this world continues through the Holy Spirit, whose coming we will celebrate next week at Pentecost.

In the limited time Jesus has with his disciples in John 15 before his betrayal and crucifixion, Jesus' focus is on love. Love one another as I have loved you. And remember that you did not choose me, but I chose you. A sermon on abiding in Jesus' love as his disciples. Today's Gospel reading is John 15:9-17.

Today's sermon focuses on a slightly obscure but extremely important Bible story from Acts 8 about Philip encountering an Ethiopian eunuch. Despite a whole list of reasons this person seems to be an outsider, the Holy Spirit directs Philip to approach and share the good news of Jesus with him, revealing that God's love is for him too.

It's a wonderful lesson for us today about the extravagant, unexpected love of Jesus overcoming human obstacles. The man asks what prevents him from being baptized, and the answer is nothing. Nothing can keep us from God's love when the Holy Spirit is at work!

Today’s Good Shepherd Sunday sermon explores the question, “What does love look like?” In 1st John 3:16, we read: “We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another.”

Love involves sacrifice. It involves giving up something. It involves laying down our lives for one another, for our friends and our neighbors and even our enemies, as Christ laid down his life for us. It means giving up some of our freedom to follow, like sheep being led by a shepherd. It means trusting that the Good Shepherd—the one who gives up his life for the sheep—knows the path and is leading us on it, safely home. Today's Scripture readings are 1 John 3:16-24, the familiar words of Psalm 23, and John 10:11-18.

Christ is risen! In Mark’s gospel, the Easter story ends with fear and uncertainty, but the cliffhanger ending invites us into the story. God is doing something new in our world, even today. Christ is risen!
