Today's sermon continues our Lenten theme of Everything [in] Between by looking at what it means to be "Lost & Found." In particular, we hear Jesus describe God as a shepherd who goes out to search for a missing sheep. Jesus' promise is that no matter how far you run from God, no matter how many times you turn your back and wander away, no matter how lost you might feel, God never gives up on you. God never stops looking for you. And when you are found by God, all heaven rejoices!

In this third Sunday in Lent, we hear Jesus tell a parable about an impatient landowner and an unproductive fig tree. Is the fig tree a waste of space and soil? Or is it an illustration of the value of rest and the folly of impatience? And where is God in this story?

On this second week in Lend, we continue A Sanctified Art's Lenten series Everything [in] Between from by looking at the favorite Lutheran topic of the tension between faith & works. In the story of Mary and Martha, Mary seems to exemplify faith by sitting and learning at Jesus' feet, while Martha spends her time engaging in good works of hospitality. Yet as followers of Jesus, we are called to both action and reflection. We are gathered in worship and sent out to live out our faith in service to our neighbors, in Jesus' name.

This week's midweek ecumenical Lent service is hosted by Living Hope. Tonight's sermon explore's Scripture’s promise that God is enough by focusing on the story of God providing manna for the Israelites as they wandered in the wilderness.

This year for Lent, Christ the King and Living Hope are using a theme from A Sanctified Art called Everything [in] Between: Meeting God in the Midst of Extremes. Each Sunday's message will explore two seemingly opposed binaries, but as we look at stories from Luke's Gospel, we'll find that God is present in between, in the full spectrum of life, not merely the black and the white. For this first Sunday in Lent, the theme is Stranger & Neighbor.

Tonight's Ash Wednesday worship introduces both our midweek ecumenical services, we're focusing on the theme Enough and our Sunday theme Everything [in] Between from A Sanctified Art.

In our daily lives, we hear message after message of scarcity. We’re told all kinds of ways we are lacking. We’re short on time and resources; we don’t have the resources we need. Often, those messages are accompanied by an invitation to buy something, but products don’t solve the problem. In this year’s midweek Lenten series, we are exploring stories in Scripture of how God is ENOUGH. God provides what we need and more for life.

The Scripture readings for tonight's joint Ash Wednesday service are Isaiah 58:1-10, Psalm 51:1-17, and Luke 9:51-62.

Today is Transfiguration Sunday, a turning point in the church year. Up on a mountain, Jesus' disciples begin to realize on a whole new level who it is they’re following. Jesus is not just a great teacher, not just another wise rabbi or holy faith healer; he is God with them. And his presence with them transforms their lives. May our lives similarly be transformed by the Holy Spirit’s presence with us!

As people of God, we are created in God's image as spiritual beings and renewed with the promise of new life. Rooted in that identity in Christ, we are set free to live in a way that looks different than the world expects. In this Sunday's reading from Luke 6:27-38, Jesus calls us to radical new ways of living like loving our enemies, giving to everyone who asks of us, and forgiving as we have been forgiven. 

In short, as Luke 6:31 says, "Do to others as you would have them do to you." Sounds simple, right? But to live God's way consistently is more than any of us can do on our own. Thanks be to God for giving us the strength to persevere and for grace when we fall short!

This Sunday's Gospel reading is a perhaps familiar story of Jesus calling disciples to follow him. But rather than picking the elite of society, the cream of the crop of potential recruits, Jesus chooses a few ordinary fishermen. It’s a surprising choice for starting a movement, but it’s consistent with the way God typically works. Over and over in Scripture, we read stories of God choosing flawed people. As a church full of ordinary, flawed people, that’s good news for us!
