While mixing metaphors isn't generally a good idea, Paul actually does it well here.

Paul reminds Timothy of those who got him to where he is in the faith.

Paul reminds Timothy to know what's worth dying for and what's not worth dying for. This will help him choose his battles as the saying goes.

Last Sunday we talked about Saul’s heroic rescue of the citizens of Jabesh (1 Samuel 10-12). We learned that:

*Sin separates us from God because God is holy and sin is not.

*Saul gathered the men of Israel to rescue the people of Jabesh.

*Saul showed mercy to the people who questioned him.

*Just like how Saul showed mercy to the Israelites who questioned him, Jesus shows his enemies (us) mercy and dies for us so that we can be forgiven.

Paul deals with the challenging people in our lives. The people who don't do things the way we want them done. The people who say and do things that go against our preferred methods. How do we deal with these people?

Paul gives practical advice on how to deal within relationships as followers of Jesus.

Paul reminds Timothy, and us as well, that just because someone is young it doesn't mean they aren't able to teach us something and just because someone is old it doesn't mean they have it all together.

Paul gives some guidance on who should aspire to be in the pastoral office and what it takes by way of character.
