Invincible. It means too powerful to be defeated; incapable of being overcome. Unconquerable. It’s the description God gives to those who take refuge in his son, Jesus. But if we’re honest, that moniker doesn’t always stick. Lots of times we feel defeated, afraid, overpowered, and outnumbered. God understands. That’s why He gives us multiple arguments from various authors with robust arguments. One of the most powerful comes at the end of Romans chapter 8, where Paul says something so over-the-top encouraging, people have tattooed it on their bodies, stenciled it on their walls, and had it engraved on their tombstones. One of the most formidable promises in the Bible appears near the end of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church in Rome. He was writing to a church in a cultural crisis. He was calling them to honor Jesus in a culture that honored self. He was declaring Jesus as Lord in a culture that declared Caesar Lord. He was challenging them to follow Jesus exclusively in a culture that believed in multiple gods and goddesses. The power we need to take such a counter-cultural stand comes through God’s promises.
